An executive golf course nestled next to the Gatineau Hills celebrated a half century of operation in 2014 with little fanfare. That’s just the way it works at the Dunnderosa Golf Club, one of the best kept secrets in the Outaouais with its country character, quietness and family atmosphere.

The Dunnderosa Golf Club is located in a natural setting on 50 acres at the corner of Notch and Kingsmere Roads neighbouring the MacKenzie King Estate and the Gatineau Park and just around the corner from Old Chelsea, Quebec.

Old Chelsea is a 200 year-old village that played an important role in the early business, agricultural and recreational life of Canada’s Capital and today is the gateway to the Gatineau Park for millions of visitors. The Hendrick Farm is at the heart of historic Old Chelsea village. This working farm was owned by the Hendrick family for more than 100 years and continues to act as an important reminder of the agricultural and rural heritage of the village. Agriculture is a centrepiece of the Hendrick Farm community bringing local food production back to Old Chelsea.

The eighteen par three holes on the Dunnderosa golf course are perfect for all levels of golfers to learn, practice or just have a good time playing with friends. With a total yardage of 2410 yards, the holes average 134 yards and the shortest is the ninth hole measuring 100 yards and the longest is the 194 yard first hole. Many golfers play at Dunnderosa hoping to score that elusive hole-in-one and why not as they have eighteen chances each time they play.

Two distinct nine holes are in play with the front nine more open than the back nine which has play on tight tree-lined fairways with narrow opening to the greens. Elevation changes throughout the golf course are abundant and postage-stamp greens with plenty of slope are the norm. In fact, even skilled golfers have a hard time keeping their golf balls on the greens with their tee and fairway approaches.

Also the norm at Dunnderosa are the scenic views and the wildlife. The course is especially picturesque in the fall when the color changes are in full bloom.

After a round of golf, make sure you drop in to the restaurant and have your food and beverages delivered to the outside deck overlooking the golf course. Enjoy the atmosphere while you relive your game. The indoor licensed banquet facility at Dunnderosa can accommodate 95 people for private or corporate outings, golf tournaments, parties, weddings and receptions. Staff will work with you to make sure your personalized menu will suit your needs. Whether you group is small or large, you are sure to be welcomed in a comfortable atmosphere providing an memorable experience.

Apart from golf, visitors to the Dunnderosa Golf Club can also avail themselves of the two tennis courts (take note that equipment for the tennis courts is not provided by the golf club) and the accessible Gatineau Park trails.

As to the history of the Dunnderosa Golf Club, the following information was extracted from a plaque located in a portion of the historic clubhouse certified as being constructed more than 100 years ago.

Major Desmond L. Dunn was the developer and original proprietor of the Dunndersosa Golf Club. This log cabin, now part of the Clubhouse, was constructed sometime in the mid-1800’s. It was part of the Ryan family homestead and farm from 1889 to 1947, sitting on approximately 54 acres. Desmond’s grandmother Ellen was a daughter of the original homesteader.

In 1947, it became a Dunn family property and in the early 1960’s, Desmond converted it into an 18-hole, par 3 golf course. The Dunnderosa Golf Course opened for business in the summer of 1964. It remained under the Dunn family ownership until 2001.

The name of the golf course came from Desmond’s wife Maureen, one Sunday evening, inspired by the TV Show Bonanza.

In 2001, ownership of the Dunnderosa Golf Club was purchased by Gilles Boily and his brothers. Pierre Wistaff became a part owner in 2003. As Mr. Wistaff said in a recent interview, “I had always dreamed of owning a golf course”. “Every year we work to improve the golf course”, said Mr. Wistaff when asked about future improvements being considered. The ongoing maintenance and improvements are carried out by Gilles Boily and his green-keeping crew.

To enhance the golf club operation, a major mini-putt course called Dunn-D’s was added to the site in 2009. The centerpiece of Dunn-D’s is the waterfall surrounded by eighteen holes featuring tricky putts on fairways with rock outcrops and bordered by streams leading to undulating and multi-tiered greens. The front nine holes on Dunn-D’s were designed for accessibility by players with reduced mobility.

The Dunnderosa Golf Club is a golf club suited for all levels of golfers. Their 18 par 3 holes are just right for play and practice in a relaxed atmosphere and Dunn-D’s mini-putt course is ideal for a family competition for all ages.

That elusive hole-in-one sought after by all golfers could be waiting for you, so make sure you plan a visit to the Dunnderosa Golf Club.
