The Lombard Glen Golf & Country Club eighteen-hole course is owned and operated by the Sherman Family and it is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2016.

The 160 acre golf course property, located just south of Smiths Falls on Highway 15, was originally crown land that was granted to an individual who worked on the building of the Rideau Canal and is named in honour of the King of Gypsies (Lombard) who lived nearby on the Anglican Church Hill.

Dave Sherman had worked on a few properties with Lombard Glen course designer David L. Moote in Southern Ontario and when offered the chance to become involved with Lombard Glen in 1994, he and his wife moved to the area and he took over as greens superintendent.

When the opportunity came to purchase the golf course in 1997, a dream of Dave and Jean came to fruition as they always had a desire to own a golf course. In 1998, the Lombard Glen Golf & Country Club began its run under their ownership with improvements to the clubhouse, including a new banquet room, a repositioning of the pro shop to provide better service to their clients and also give a better view of the first and tenth tee areas.

Dave and Jean share ownership with their son, Michael Sherman, who is fully dedicated as Head Golf Professional at Rosedale Golf Club in Toronto for his 15th year. He resides in Thornhill with his wife Dulce and their three children Ashton, Makena and Seth ranging in ages from 16 to 8 years.

Lombard Glen has a loyal membership and play in their various leagues is near capacity. On Tuesdays, the club offers a morning ladies league and an Industrial League with a 5:30 pm shotgun start for players of all walks of life. On Wednesday’s, the course is inundated with senior men in the morning and a twilight men’s league in the evening. Ladies also have a twilight league on Thursday evenings. The junior program is also very active with Junior Camps, a Monday League and Take A Kid to the Course week.

Don’t despair if you’re looking to play as a green fee player as space is generally available through skilful coordination by the pro shop staff.

The air-conditioned clubhouse is available for special events. Licensed for 150, staff at Lombard Glen can cater to your needs from weddings to private parties.

Practice and warm-up facilities available at Lombard Glen include a 280-yard driving range as well as a practice bunker and chipping and putting greens. The driving range is a favourite of LPGA Professional Brooke Henderson along with her sister Brittany on their visits home from the grind of the LPGA Tour. There are also plenty of motorized carts available if golfers choose not to walk the course.

As for the course, tree-lined fairways and large bentgrass greens are featured along with water hazards on half of the holes on the golf course.

Two par three holes where water comes into play off the tee are #7 and #11, but what could be considered signature holes are #’s 15 and 16. The fifteenth hole is a lengthy par 5 measuring between 429 and 585 yards. Players are left with a risky third shot to a wide but shallow green framed by water and tall natural grasses. The sixteenth hole is a par 3 measuring from 134-220 yards with an intimidating tee shot over natural grasses to a small green.

Challenging and interesting are two words that can best describe play on the golf course.

Jean and Dave Sherman have seen many changes in their time at Lombard Glen Golf & Country Club. They have experienced an ice storm, and continually made changes to better meet the demands of the their clientele.

As the golf business is seasonal, Lombard Glen is very fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced core staff assisted by local students and residents. The success to the league play and and tournaments is due to the excellent organizing done by the many volunteers and league sponsors.

But through it all, the Sherman’s still enjoy coming to work and they have built a solid relationship with golfers and the community. They maintain a golf course where golfers are offered a comfortable golf experience in a friendly atmosphere where fun is the key.  It is almost like a family at Lombard Glen and that is certainly the way everyone seems to like it.

Everything you may be looking for in golf is available at Lombard Glen with friendly people, a challenging golf course, and all the services and amenities available in a fine clubhouse.
