A month from today golfers will be able to put the new Callaway Golf Chrome Soft golf ball into play.  On January 16 the product will be available at retail.

The build up for the ball has been that it will "redefine golf ball performance and change the category."

That remains to be seen and we've yet to test the product so we certainly can't provide much of an opinion on performance attributes, for now. We hope to give them a test outdoors in the next month and we'll report back then.

The company is leaning on two factors to give the ball a very soft feel yet still have high ball speeds - a new proprietary "SoftFast Core" with low compression and a cover made of "Tour Urethane".

The claim is that the 65 compression core is easy to compress for a soft feel and high spin around greens but that it's "fast" characteristics don't compromise distance.

Dave Bartels, Senior Director of Callaway Golf Ball Research & Development comments, "The SoftFast Core is a technology we've been working on for quite a few years that we finally feel like we've put it into a…

I'll be trying it. I'm a big fan of the Chrome and Chrome+. Too bad it's not available a few weeks earlier, I could have gamed it in AZ.

I think I'll give this ball a try when I'm south this winter and will report back on it.  The hype makes it look really good but until actually hitting it for a few rounds you never know.

Did some simulator testing with this ball today with a buddy.  Compared it to Titleist ProV1 and Pro1X.

Hope to do more detailed testing soon but it is faring well so far.

Feel is near equivalent in softness off irons and full wedges (still want to do more partial shot testing on real grass) and spin rates on full wedges were in a similar range as ProV1x.

Very preliminary and durability, discolouration, and even putting feel not tested yet so hard to make a final verdict.

Promising though.

What's MSRP on these?

Never mind. GT has them for $40.

Preliminary report -

Played 18 in the simulator and did some extra hitting with drivers and wedge for #'s

Driver spin equal to X version of "leading ball product"

100 yard wedges producing spin #'s in 9000 range similar to "leading ball product"

No tests yet for putting and partial wedge shots (will do some of these outdoors next week).

Feel was very good - comparable to top tour product,

Unfortunately I hit the same ball used yesterday about 12 more times today and had a ball failure (crack).

This happens often in extended use in the simulator but one so early is notable.  Not unprecedented though among a number of brands so I'm not saying it is indicative of anything at this point. Would say it had about 200-250 strikes on it.

Will keep testing and report further.

Yesterday I picked up a dozen of the Chrome Soft balls (yellow) and today got to give them a try.  I say them as I did deposit one in a pond. When I first tried it on the putting green the first thing I noticed was how soft it felt and I liked the feel there so we were off to a good start. It took me some holes before getting my swing sorted out and then really got to like this ball.   With the driver I don't think I got any more distance than normal but with my irons I seemed to be about a good half club longer.  What I really liked with the irons was the soft feel and how the ball stopped on the greens.  I've played this course many times and usually have to land short to keep any ball on the green but I flew many in and was surprised how quickly the ball did stop for me.  The guys I was playing with were also surprised as they've seen my approach shots before.  Didn't get any skins to help pay for them but I think these balls could be staying in the bag.  Two thumbs up for me. Cool
