"Better is not the same. The same does not get you better.”

That proclamation is not surprising when you consider the source.  Nate Radcliffe may be a relative newcomer at Nike Golf (he joined their team in 2012) but their Director of Engineering is perfect fit - his statement is well in line with the spirit of a company relatively new to golf equipment (less than 15 years) but willing to take some risks.

Radcliffe and the Nike Golf R&D team hangs out in a place a little different than the norm for the golf industry - Ft. Worth, Texas.

It was not far from their offices, on a fateful day in 1963, that U.S. President John F. Kennedy, addressed a crowd in front of the Hotel Texas.  On a wet and miserable morning he noted the resilience of the people and opened with “Ladies and Gentleman, there are no faint hearts in Ft. Worth…”

Five decades later it appears that is still the case and it extends to those who work at “The Oven”, Nike Golf’s Ft. Worth incubator.

Just like that crowd did, while the golf industry appears to be mired in turbulent…

Apparently the Vapor Pro driver I was fitted for in Texas and got to use there is now at the office.  Eager to get more than 12 holes with it and play around with settings next week on our annual Road Trip.

I'll follow up with some more feedback and maybe @fgm_publisher can chime in since he'll get to swat it for the first time as well.

Had a number of test sessions in Charleston and Hilton Head plus one more indoor testing. fgm_publisher liked it so much it left my testing bag for his gamer bag.

I have not formalized a review yet but subsequent testing pretty much confirmed my initial thoughts.  Great performance from a full size head (460) with improved feel and sound over prior models.  Spin rates not crazy low on centred hits.

A little surprising the pro version wouldn't be real low spin. Then again I guess it's a bit surprising the pro version is 460cc at all. Most pro/tour models with other companies tend to be more like 440 do they not? Have you tried the flex yet? Does flipping the core noticeably affect the flight?

Pro is just a name.  Each driver just fits differently, allowing for various options to fit players.  Rory wanted a driver with a full profile which was the genesis of the Vapor Pro.  Originally there were just the Flex and Speed models.

Yes, I tried tested the Flex at The Oven. It is the smallest profile and lowest spinning of the models.  It also has a duller sound.  I actually hit shots with the Flight Pod in both positions.  With the pod pushing the weight forward I hit some on-centre shots with as low as 1500 rpms (I tested mostly with a Diamana Blue Board 70 gram S Flex), forcing me to put the loft up noticeably to achieve optimum numbers.  I did see increases in the 250-300 rpm range with the pod reversed.  Mind you I needed to take a few swings to try and get the strike in a location where I could actually compare properly.

The Flex is definitely a spin killer so not for everybody.

It was originally designed is a shape to fit Tiger's eye but he eventually put the Speed in play.

Interesting on the flex. I hit down on my driver a bit so get too much spin. Could be a good one to try.

So I just got back from golf town where I got to hit a bunch of the new Nike Vapor line with the Nike Rep, JP, Hit the Pro combos first and all thought I wasn't a huge fan of the slightly thicker topline then my VR pro combo irons I very quickly forgot about that after a couple swings,  They felt great, had a nice (simulator) ball flight and distance was right on what I expected out of my 8 iron.

Then hit a bunch of drives with the Speed driver, from my past history with Nike I kind a know that this model would fit me the best. I was excited to give it a shot as it brought back the compression channel which was a feature on my all time fav Nike driver the VR.  I ended up loving the look and feel and results as well.  it felt more stable and even with my wonky winter swing produced some great results.

Did hit any thing else but got a good look a the new 3 woods,  the Pro looking the best with its smaller profile head that reminds me a lot more of the Titleist I am use to.  As for the hybrids, this is one spot I have never had good results with Nike but I do like the look of them this year and will definitely look to test them when we can finally see the ball fly in the real world!!

All and all I think Nike got a lot of good gear coming out this year and I can for sure see a few of them making their way into my bag this season.
