When you spend some time around the PGA TOUR, particularly snooping into the golf bags of the best players in the world, one thing becomes obvious – the majority trust their short games to a wedge wizard from the suburbs of Montreal.
It’s been many year since Bob Vokey lived in Canada but his passion for his native country may only be surpassed by his pursuit of making the best wedges in the world. His name adorns more wedges on the PGA TOUR than any other – it’s been that way since 2004. His Titleist Bob Vokey designs are revered and played by many players under contract to other companies, a sure sign of their value in helping a player perform.
That holds true for their new SM5 (Spin Milled 5) wedges which find their way to retail shelves on March 14th. The line brings sweeping new changes to the Vokey family with a new groove design, tour-proven head shapes, stunning new finishes, and a bevy of grinds to help the golfer better match their turf interaction for more consistent results.
Vokey and his team of craftsmen has been hard at work creating this extensive new line and, as always, Vokey gushes like a new father when he speaks of it. ““I’ve always said I have the best R&D facility in the world – the PGA Tour,” Vokey said. “I worked closely with our team of craftsmen and engineers to apply everything I’ve learned from the best players in the world to Spin Milled 5. We’ve increased the spin. We’ve given players more control. And we’ve got a bounce and grind matrix that will provide the versatility and confidence to hit a variety shots around the green and get up and down more.”
Now several years into using the Spin Milled process, each of the 8620 carbon steel wedges gets exacting treatment to ensure the face and grooves are precisely surfaced and cut for maximum spin. Wider “TX3” grooves in the lofts from 56-62 degrees provide a greater degree of spin while conforming to the rules of golf. Their inclusion was only made possible through the use of the Spin Milled process.
Spin Milled 5 wedges are available in lofts of 46º to 62º (in two degree increments) and six tour-inspired sole grinds (L, T, S, M, F and K), with each model properly sorted into low, mid and high bounce categories. The result is the game’s most extensive and effective selection of bounce and grind options, made up of 21 different loft/bounce/grind combinations to satisfy all swing types, shot-making styles and turf conditions.
“With wedges, it’s never one size fits all,” Vokey said. “Wedges are required to hit many different types of shots. And every player has a different technique, a different style. That’s why we have so many options. It’s important that players see an authorized Titleist fitter to get fit for their SM5 wedges, so they know they’re playing a setup that fits their game.”
Completing the picture is the availably of three distinct finishes – Tour Chrome, Gold Nickel and Raw Black. Each of the wedge combinations is available in both right and left hand.
We’re told sell-in to Canadian Titleist accounts for the new SM5 wedges has been rapid, pointing to continued success for the Vokey franchise. Bob Vokey’s enthusiasm for his designs seems only matched by the pace at which golfers put his wedges in their bags.
