Nine golf courses later, we saw the last of the layouts scheduled for this year’s Road Trip through North Carolina today. And what a golf course it was.
It was only appropriate that the last course we played on our journey also possesses what has been voted the best finishing holes in the entire golf-crazy state of North Carolina. That is a tall order but Old North State Golf Club earned the honours honestly; the Tom Fazio design starts quietly and builds to a crescendo that has few rivals.
The 16th hole gives you a glimpse of massive Badin Lake near the green while the closing duo put it in full sight as you play the closing par three and par five holes. It is a memorable conclusion that obviously has captured the attention of many – almost every golfer we talked to about the course mentioned it specifically.
The annual home to the ACC Golf Championship is the centerpiece of a very exclusive community far away from any urban development. Located about 45 minutes from Charlotte, this lakeside retreat is renowned for it’s beauty. On-site accommodations at “The Lodge” are intimate with the highest level of personal service.
Unfortunately for us we needed every calorie we consumed from our breakfast this morning – more than two and half inches of rain and a cool weather system made golf a bit of a grind. Nevertheless we took advantage of being the only golfers on the course and took time to savour the quality holes that Fazio drew out of the magnificent site. The course is so good that it even attracted PGA Tour star Bubba Watson to join. In fact Watson actually won the Club Championship this year…
by a whopping 31 strokes! actually beating the defending champion, Ron Swanner, by 31 strokes.
In just over a week we have played some 163 holes of golf, on the impressive McConnell Golf Trail, in Fayetteville, and the Sandhills region of the state. North Carolina has served up another intriguing array of golf courses. It may take some days to digest all that we have seen but for the thirteen hour drive home to Canada that starts tomorrow we’ll likely be smiling the entire way.
