Alena Sharp, the second ranked Canadian female golfer and probable competitor in the 2016 Summer Olympics that will be held in Rio De Janeiro has agreed to act as the Honorary Chair for the Labour Day Charity Classic that will be held on Monday, September 5th at the Prescott Golf Club in support of the St. John Ambulance Branch of Leeds-Grenville and Lanark.
A Hamilton, Ontario native, she has traveled the world playing on the LPGA Tour and other international tournaments. If she qualifies she will be partnering at the Rio Olympics with Smiths Falls’ own Brooke Henderson, who is currently ranked No. 11 in the world professional rankings, the first time that golf has been a part of the Summer Olympics since 1904.
David Dargie, Fundraising Coordinator for St. John Ambulance remarked, “This is an exciting announcement that we are making today. Having Alena Sharp as the Honorary Chair of our 2016 Labour Day Charity Classic means that we will now have had both Canadian Olympians associated with the Caring for Our Community Capital Campaign. Brooke Henderson was the Honorary Chair for our 2014 Riverside GMC $1Million Hole-in-One Challenge. Alena Sharp is a talented LPGA veteran who has made a mark on Canadian golf since her rookie year in 2005. Above all, she is a generous person who has taken time out of her busy schedule and agreed to support our fund raising efforts!”
Entry fee for the Labour Day Charity Classic will be $110 per player. Entry forms and further tournament information will be published on the “Friends of St. John Ambulance” Facebook page by the end of March.
In addition to the September 5th tournament at the Prescott Golf Club, the local St. John Ambulance Branch will be holding a “3Golf Challenge” at the Sunnidell Golf & Learning Centre on Saturday, July 16th. This unique tournament will feature 18 holes of 2 person “Scramble” on the Sunnidell Executive Course; 18 holes of 2 person “Best Ball” on the Miniature Golf layout; and 18 holes of Alternate Shot “Foot Golf”. Players can enter as 2 person teams for all 3 events or for individual events.
Riverside Brockville GMC will be the Title Sponsor and Sears Brockville has come on board as the Presenting Sponsor. A charity BBQ will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM on July 16th and will be open to the public as well as the tournament competitors. Special emphasis on junior golfers, as well as parents competing with their children, will be a hallmark of what is hoped to be an annual event.
Entry forms and more information on the July 16th event will also be published on the “Friends of St. John Ambulance” Facebook page.
