And then there was one.
Austin James (19) of Bath, Ontario, the 2014 Canadian Junior Boys Golf Champion, is the last remaining Canadian in the field at the United Amateur Championship.
James was part of a threesome of Canadians, including Austin Connelly and Garrett Rank, who qualified for the match play portion of the championship being contested at the Olympia Fields Country Cub just outside Chicago, Illinois. Connelly and Rank both fell in their round of 64 matches.
James, a member of the golf team at Charleston Southern University and playing out of the Loyalist Country Club, advanced to match play via a stunning second stroke play round of 67. He then kept the momentum flowing in match play – blitzing his first opponent, American Miller Capps, with six birdies in 15 holes to earn a 4&3 victory.
On Thursday the 18 year-old Canadian, the 19th seed, will take on Denny McCarthy of Colorado, the 51st seed, the round of 32.
