After an uncharacteristic first round of play at the 2016 Olympics where she recorded two double bogeys and turned in a round of 70, Brooke Henderson was aware that she needed to gain ground.

She noted of her first lap around the Reserva de Marapendi Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro, “Other than five holes yesterday, I played awesome.”

Golf, of course, is an eighteen hole game and at a five stroke deficit to the leader, the Smiths Falls sensation needed a hot second round to get in contention. She delivered.

The 18 year-old posted a 7 under par score of 64 on Thursday, highlighted by a spectacular run of holes as she made her way into the clubhouse.

“Yeah, it was a much better day today,” said with enthusiasm after play was completed. “I felt better right off the bat. I was 2‑under through my first nine holes, which was good, and I was hoping to get a few more birdies on the back nine, and I definitely was able to do that, especially my last six holes. I kind of got momentum and putts drained for me and I was able to hit some really good shots. I’m really happy with today and hopefully I’ll do something similar tomorrow.”

In her six closing holes Henderson made birdies on five of them, only missing out on the 14th hole.

The exceptional round put the Canadian that much closer to a podium finish; she now shares 3rd place with Charley Hull of Great Britain, and, at 134 is just two strokes off the lead held by Inbee Park of Korea.

As for how she feels about her position with 36 holes left on the schedule, the 3-time LPGA Tour winner was clear that it is no time to admire her play so far.

“There’s still lots of golf left and lots of people around the leaderboard. I have a lot of work to do but so does everybody else here. So hopefully I’ll have two more solid rounds of golf.”

Henderson’s Canadian golf teammate, Alena Sharp, also had good second round in Rio. The Hamilton native added a 2-under par, 69, to her total. She shares 32nd place.
