Seven Canadian junior golfers were in Georgia this past weekend to compete in the US Kids Golf Foundation Jekyll Island Cup.
Young golfers have been heading to this famed island retreat to compete in U.S. Kids tournament play since 2004 and Canadians have a long tie with the island and club. Former Royal Ottawa Golf Club professional and 2-time Canadian Open Champion (1909, 1914) Karl Keffer used to spend his winters at the club as their professional.
There is no guarantee that any of the kids who played this past weekend will go on to such national success but a few are showing a high level of talent.
Sarah Beqaj of Toronto took top spot in the Girls 12 year-old division with rounds of 74 and 77.
Another Torontonian, Vanessa Borovilos, tied for second in the Girls 8 year-old division. She will be headed to Augusta National Golf Club next month just prior to The Masters as one of three Canadian to qualify for the Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship. You can read more about her in this story we posted last week.
David Hopkins of Viking, Alberta took second place in the Boys 6 and Under class.
Jordan Hwang of Richmond Hill, Ontario was the 5th place finisher in the Boys 7 year-old category.
Oshawa, Ontario’s Madelin Boyd earned 6th place in the Girls 10 year-old class, and finally, Raesa Sheikh of Markham, Ontario earned 13th place in the 11 year-old Girls Division.
