Chloe Currie was doing her best to keep focussed on Thursday as she played the final round of the Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship at the Loyalist Country Club in Bath, Ontario.

Just as she did last year, the Mississauga resident began fourth round play with a lead. Although she eventually won the championship in 2015 at the Loch March Golf & Country Club in Kanata, she did so with a little more drama than she hoped.  She gave up a six-stroke lead and eventually had to win a playoff to secure the title. In was a stumble, but one that eventually did not prove fatal.

This year the Team Canada Development Team member had a three-shot lead with eighteen holes to play, and not only did she have to keep the demons of last year at bay, the 16 year-old was also aware that this time around, she was chasing history. Some big players have won the prestigious Ontario title in consecutive years, and she wanted to join them. But she had to deal with the task at hand first.

She did so successfully, making just one bogey on the day. It came on the first hole and allowed pursuer Ellie Szeryk to get within two strokes, but 17 pars to follow for Currie, and a lack of a charge by the other players, secured the historic win for the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club member. She ended the day at one-over (73) to bring her four-day tournament total to two-under (70-73-70-73-286).

Currie admitted that she used last year’s experience to her advantage.

“Last year I got a little ahead of myself on the last day and made a few mistakes and then was able to get it together,” the joyous champion told Flagstick after the victory. “This year I learned from that and to  just play one shot at a time, and don’t look back. Just focus on the next one; focus on what’s ahead and at the end of the day hopefully the result will have worked out the way that I way that I am hoping for. But not trying to force it.”

That said, the bogey on the first hole in round four did get her attention, and not in a good way. Asked if it was hard to keep her mindset after the stumble she replied, “It was, because you have little memories of last year when it really wasn’t a good start but I’m a year stronger. My head is a year stronger; mentally just knowing where I want to be so I was able to find where I wanted to be a little quicker and that’s why I was able to have a very consistent round from the second hole on today.”

Elite Company

The champion says she knew winning twice in a row would put her in elite company, but was not fully aware just how much so. Although World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit, 8-time LPGA winner Sandra Post, and LPGA stars Alena Sharp and Brooke Henderson are among those who have managed the feat, it was the success of the recent KPMG Women’s PGA Champion that she was most familiar with. Apparently a social media mention from this very outlet, @Flagstick , changed that.

“I knew about Brooke because I remember seeing her sign last year and thinking , like wow, she won it twice, I would love to do that. It’s incredible that a year later I have won it twice and next year my sign will have two years on it. That’s so cool. As far as the other girls though I had no clue; I hadn’t looked that far back and when I read your tweet last night I was like, wow, don’t get ahead of yourself, but wouldn’t that be cool. I’d love to be part of that history.”

And now she is.

Finishing in a tie for second were London’s Isabella Portokalis and London’s Ellie Szeryk. For Portokalis, the leader after the first two days, she had a rough start to the day finishing five-over on the front nine. However, the West Haven Golf & Country Club and Team Ontario member, rebounded nicely on the back nine shooting four-under to complete the round at one-over (73) and the tournament at three-over (68-74-76-73-291).

Home club golfer Diana McDonald had a strong showing, earning 6th place alone.

The low final round went to Madeline Marck-Sherk with a three under par, 69.
