Even with snow still on the ground, one of the first signs that the golf season is just around the corner was seen at The Meadows Golf Club on the evening of Tuesday, March 28th.
GAL Golf Leagues For Women held the first of two information evenings for returning members, new members or women exploring league possibilities. Their second information meeting will be held on Thursday, April 27th at Cedarhill Golf & Country Club.
In addition to the information on the upcoming season provided by League President Marie Seabrook – Fleming and her League Captains, those in attendance had the opportunity to purchase Nancy Lopez, Antigua and Cutter & Buck merchandise at 25% off retail prices.
Flagstick Golf Magazine caught up with GAL Golf Leagues For Women founder Marie Seabrook – Fleming and we asked her about the upcoming 2017 season.
“We are all very proud to have been a part of the Habitat for Humanity “All Women Build”, said Marie.”It was our charity of choice last year and we raised $10,700 to be the top fundraising team. Shane & Laura Michaelis and their five children received the keys to their new house last week and Our GAL Team felt very good about this initiative. It’s just an emotional story of a family who is working so hard, who want to bring up their children in a safe and clean environment and there just wasn’t housing available for them. They actually pay a mortgage and all of the regular contributions go towards it.”
As for their charity choice for 2017, the GAL Captains will make a decision at their next Captain’s meeting. Marie continued with a list of new initiatives for 2017.
“We are participating in the CP Women’s Open at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club in August. We have adopted a hole and our members will be marshalling it throughout the tournament.
We’ve added an 18-hole League on Mondays which alternates between Cedarhill, Kanata and Manderley and we are exploring a few other clubs for the rotation.
We have our 18-hole road trips scheduled every couple of weeks during the summer at Mont-Ste-Marie, Rockland (formally Outaouais), Dragonfly and Kanata.
Our Market Place is up and running on our website (www.galgolf.ca), so our members can post items for sale.
We’ll be at the Women’s Show on April 8th and 9th.
Lessons for our GAL Members continue with Pam Leblanc in the west end and Colin Orr in the east end.”
When asked about more women playing golf, Marie responded – “Our numbers are up from last year and we have old members who have left and are now coming back. They like the fact they can pay in advance and play 17 weeks for the price of 14. Women just show up with their clubs and play. We look after the rest. We are all about the “F” word – Fashion, Fitness, Food, Friendship and Fun. Come join us.”
