It may be well below zero but the outdoor golf season is getting of to an early start in Ottawa, Ontario tomorrow. Sure, the Ottawa Senators are in full roar at ScotiaBank Place but just a kilometre or so away at 560 Hazeldean Road the Kevin Haime Golf Centre will open for business on Saturday.
The landmark driving range and teaching centre operated by Lisa and Kevin Haime is taking a new approach to their business this season. They have fortified their establishment with a protective building structure (a removable wall) and enhanced themselves with heaters in an effort to extend the all-too-short National Capital golf season.
The 21 heaters that sit over top of their covered hitting areas will keep eager golfers plenty warm tomorrow. Flagstick staff tested out the 3000-watt personal infrared heaters last Fall and found them to keep you comfortable without having the excessive hotspots that we have experienced with some outdoor heaters.
“I’ve seen this before in other places but it’s a first for Ottawa,” Kevin Haime told Flagstick this morning as their staff prepared for opening day. “It might be cold outside but you are well sheltered and so far in testing everyone that has tried it has really loved it. I guess the golf season in Ottawa just got a little big longer.”
For several years golfers down in Kingston have been able to visit the Westbrook Golf Club and their range that features heaters but now golfers closer to Ottawa will not have to make a trip to the Limestone City to get the early and late season heated range experience.
We can’t be there for the opening tomorrow at 10 A.M. but we imagine that there will be a steady stream of traffic as the passionate golfers of Ottawa and surrounds stretch their golf year just a little bit further.
