It took them four extra holes but Chris Learmonth and Jason McGrath teamed up to win the Flagstick.com Player’s Tour BPG (Boutiques Pro Golf) Pro-Pro event for the PGA of Ottawa Zone on June 29th.
Learmonth (Deep River GC) and McGrath (Glen Mar GC) ended 18-hole regulation play with a score of 65 at Club de golf le Sorcier in Gatineau; it matched the total that had been posted earlier in the day by Paul Vaillancourt and Dan McNeely.
The foursome headed back on to the course for a playoff. They matched each other hole for hole until the 4th extra frame when McGrath sank a lengthy putt to secure the win.
“It was a fun day,” said McGrath afterward. “We really ham and egged it out there today.”
Learmonth added that they did make two bogeys on the day but it was not unexpected as they were unfamiliar with the layout that features strong elevation changes, several tricky doglegs and greens with very distinctive undulations.
“You make bogeys but that’s golf. We’re just happy to get the win,” he explained.
A total of five teams missed a spot in the playoff by just a stroke and had to settle for a share of 3rd place with a score of 66 in the format that included 6 holes of Better Ball, 6 holes of Chapman, and 6 holes of Scramble. They included Derek MacDonald (Brockville CC)/Scott MacLeod (Flagstick), Mike Dagenais (Champlain)/Dave Kalil (Ottawa Hunt), J.C. Beecroft (Royal Ottawa)/Marc Rouse (Royal Ottawa), Joe DiFlorio (GolfTec)/Jon Stevenson (The Meadows), and Dany Lacombe (Greyhawk)/Marc Foucault (Kingsway).
