“Junior golfers are our future; we have to do more to encourage that,” says Geoff James, Head Professional at the Loyalist Country Club in Bath, Ontario, just west of Kingston.
James himself knows all about it. He and his wife Jean have raised a couple junior golf champions, former Canadian Junior winner Austin James and Symetra Tour winner Augusta James.
Golf enriches lives for juniors but to do that they need opportunities; affordable ones. So the Loyalist Country Club set out to create one.
On May 14/15 this year the club will host the 2016 Loyalist Junior Showcase presented by Can Wealth Financial Services.
Sure, there are a number of junior golf events available but James and his team wants to take this one to a whole new level.
That starts with a pretty attractive price. For just $80 the young golfers will gave 36 holes of competitive golf on the layout that hosted a Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada event the last two years, as well as a practice round available on May 13.
They receive warm-up balls on each day and lunch during both rounds of competition.
Each player will also receive a welcome gift valued at $100.
Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 players in each division- Bantams (12 and under) PeeWee (14 and under), Juvenile (16 and under), and Junior (18 and under).
“We’re hoping to make the juniors feel like tour players for a few days,” James said at the recent Ottawa-Gatineau Golf Expo. It should be a fun event and we’re hoping to grow it from here.”
