Matt McQuillan is off to the start he hoped for at the first stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying.
The Kingston, Ontario native who currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, shot a 67 (-5) on Tuesday to lead the way at one of the twelve 1st stage qualifying sites.
McQuillan, 34, had seven birdies and two bogies on his card at the qualifier at FireWheel Golf Club in Garland, Texas, just north of Dallas.
The former PGA Tour member is tied for 1st place with Americans Jimmy Brandt and Mike Gallo.
“I feel great about my game. I’m as ready as I can be,” McQuillan told Flagstick.com a couple weeks ago on the day he headed back to the U.S. after an extended visit home to Canada where played a number of events. “I’ve been working hard on my game and I am getting more comfortable with the changes with every round I play.”
The top 22 players and ties after 72 holes will advance to the second stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying.
Jeff Ivall, formerly of the Ottawa area but now living in South Florida, opened with a 74 (+2) at the same site as McQuillan.
