Ottawa’s Pine View Golf Course, formerly run by the City of Ottawa, is now under new management.
The City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission formally ended their lease agreement (a 50 year deal that had been slated to run until 2024) on Wednesday morning. By the afternoon the NCC named the Pine View Golf Course, Inc. as the new operators. The group is slated to take over operations at the Blair Road facility as of March 1, 2014.
The announcement follows a Request for Proposal process that was initiated after the city asked last year to be released from their lease of the venture. It had been running at a deficit for some time. On Wednesday morning Ottawa City Council also voted to waive almost $1.5 million in debt owed to the city by the golf operation. The money was used to cover losses at the 36-hole golf facility over the years with the subsidy having become greater in the last decade.
Flagstick has learned that the partners in the new Pine View Golf Course, Inc. include noted golf course operator (Champlain, Les Vieux Moulins, Iroquois) Stan Brigham, the Costello brothers (Glen and Don) who own Corporate Golf (a discount golf program) and Mike Copeland, owner of Labrador Lodge in Wakefield and the GolfON.ca golf deals website.
Understandably the NCC, who only received a $1 in rent per year from the previous City of Ottawa arrangement are excited at the prospect of bringing more funds into their coffers from the golf course that sits on their property.
“I am delighted to have an agreement with Pine View Golf Course Inc. that will allow us to continue to showcase an important site in the region, said Dr. Mark Kristmanson, Chief Executive Officer of the NCC in a release to the media. “As of next spring, the public will be able to continue to enjoy this unique property in the Greenbelt, on the doorstep of the urban area.”
“We are extremely happy to have been retained as the successful proponent by the NCC,” said Mike Copeland, acting as spokesperson for Pine View Golf Course Inc. “We are committed to improving the quality of the golf course, while offering superior service at a great value to Ottawa golfers. We look forward to seeing everyone in the spring.”
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, weighed in on the handover in the release: “The City of Ottawa is pleased to have worked with the NCC to find a local business that will maintain the golf course, an asset treasured by our community.”
Under the agreement, of which no terms or length of agreement were released, the Pine View Golf Course, Inc. must maintain the site as a golf course in line with the 2013 Greenbelt Master Plan.
In the media release the NCC stated, “Improvements to the site will be completed in time for the opening this spring. Significant investments in existing infrastructure are also planned in the longer term.”
