OVGA Junior Match Play Champions Declared

After a qualifying round and two days of match play with three sudden-win playoffs, Haley Yerxa, Jake McBride, Johnny Howie and Brendan Huffner were declared Ottawa Valley Golf Association Match Play Champions at the Greensmere Golf & Country Club in the west end of the City of Ottawa on July 6th.

Haley Yerxa from The Meadows Golf & Country Club defeated Carleton Golf & Yacht Club’s Dylann Armstrong 5 & 4 in the Girls Championship. Haley defeated Rivermead’s Vivian Sasova and Dylann defeated Mississippi’s Chloe Wilson to reach the finals.

It took two extra holes but Kanata’s Jake McBride emerged the winner over Eagle Creek’s Ty Rouse in the Pee Wee division. Jake had defeated Irish Hill’s Sam Alexander and Ty defeated Mississippi’s Ellis Kinnaird to reach the final round.

Greensmere’s Johnny Howie was the winner in the Bantam division over Royal Ottawa’s Romi Dilawri after 1 extra hole of sudden-win play. Johnny defeated Carleton’s Malcolm Simpson (2up) and Cornwall’s Brayden Valiquette (1up) to reach the final match. Romi defeated the #1 (Alexandre Lefebvre from Camelot 3&2) and #4 (Quinn Arial from Camelot 2&1) qualifiers from medal play to reach the final round.

Number 10 qualifier Brendan Huffner from Royal Ottawa defeated Brockville’s Yagiz Tuna in a one hole sudden-win playoff to win the junior match play championship. Brendan reached the final round with wins over Curtis Aldrich from Rideau View (2 & 1), eQuinelle’s Logan Henry (3 & 2) and Kanata’s Cameron Belanger (4 & 3) while Yagiz defeated Mississippi’s Scott Jensen (3 & 2), Cornwall’s Nicholas Valiquette (2 & 1) and medalist Keenan McPhail from Kanata (4 & 2) to reach the final round.

Players and organizers thanked Greensmere members and staff for providing a great venue for the OVGA Match Play Championship. All agreed that the course was in tremendous shape for competition.
