OVGA Junior and Senior Match Play Champions Decided at The Meadows

Between Monday, August 14 and Wednesday, August 16 The Meadows Golf & Country Club, a thirty-six hole facility in the south end of the City of Ottawa, hosted the Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s Junior and Senior Match Play Championships.

On Monday, OVGA Golfers played a qualifying round for the match play portion of the championships. On Tuesday and Wednesday matches were played to declare champions in Senior and Junior categories.

SENIOR MEN’S MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Sixteen men qualified for the match play round with scores posted between 1 under par 71 and 78. Hylands Tom Hossfeld bested Kanata’s John Hunt (4 & 3), Greensmere’s Lyle Alexander (4 & 3) and Rivermead’s Joseph Pethes (3 & 2) to reach the finals with Les Vieux Moulin’s Rick St. Denis. Rick had reached the finals with wins over The Meadows Kerry Boire (1 up), Mont Ste-Marie’s Stan Hogan (4 & 3) and Kanata’s Dru Lafave (2 & 1).

In the final match Tom Hossfeld got off to an early lead and he made the turn up by 5 holes and went on to win up six holes with 5 left to play. This was Tom’s second championship in the Senior Match Play Championship, the other coming in 2014. Tom had also lost in the finals of the 2015 matches to Mr. St. Denis. After being awarded the championship trophy, Mr. Hossfeld returned to the Hylands Golf Club to meet his Mackenzie Tour – Canada player for whom he would be caddying in the Nation Capital Open To Support Our Troops Championship.

JUNIOR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

OVGA junior golfers participated in six championship divisions over the three days at The Meadows.

Pee Wee Boy’s Championship

Renfrew’s Carter Jarrett backed up his earlier City & District Championship with match play wins over Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s Yauri Xu (4 & 3) and GreyHawk’s Andrew Milloy (2 & 1). Andrew had reached the final round with his win over Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s Jayson Ross (5 & 4).

Bantam Boy’s Championship

With wins over Falcon Ridge’s Francisco Sanchez (2 up), Mississippi’s Ellis Kinnaird (6&5) and Hyland’s Jayden Proulx (6 & 4), Kanata’s Jake McBride was the winner in the Bantam Division of the championship. Jayden had reached the final round with wins over Hyland’s Connor Elliot and Renfrew’s Kaleb Clemmer (2 up).

Juvenile Boy’s Championship

Rideau View junior Malcolm Simpson was declared the winner in the juvenile division after wins over Rideau View team-mate William Collins (1 up), Kanata’s Alexander Brisebois and Camelot’s Brandon White (2 & 1). Brandon reached the final round with wins over Camelot’s Alexandre Lefebvre (2 up) and Kanata’s Hunter McGee (19 holes).

Junior Boys Championship

Cornwall’s Nicholas Valiquette defeated Brockville’s Tyler Read (2 & 1) and eQuinelle’s Logan Henry (4 & 3) to win the junior division of the match play championship. Logan had defeated Hyland’s Matt Anderson (4 & 3) to reach the final.

Junior Girls Championship

For the third year in a row Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s Haley Yerxa was a winner in the OVGA’s Junior Match Play Championship. Haley defeated Hyland’s Kylen Ridyard (5 & 3) and Hautes Plaines Florence Leduc (5 & 3) to win the junior girls championship. Florence reached the final round with wins over Falcon Ridge’s Mariia Liu (4 & 3) and Royal Ottawa’s Megan MacGregor-Coste (5 & 3).
