Perfect conditions greeted the competitors at  2016 Flagstick Open Amateur Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf Canada and they took full advantage of it.

Eighteen year-old Noah Steele of Kingston, Ontario toured the eQuinelle Golf Club in Kemptville, ON in just 133 strokes (68-65) to earn the title he came so closing to winning in 2015 when he placed second. In doing so he tied the tournament scoring record set by Allen McGee.

Fresh off a tie for 14th place at the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship, Steele says he was relieved and excited with the victory.

“It was awesome,” said the Cataraqui Golf & Country member who will be attending Sam Houston State University this Fall on a golf scholarship. “I could definitely get used to doing it more,” he added after the trophy presentation. “It’s been a long time coming so I think the most important thing was that I just stay as patient as possible and kind of just let the round continue.”

The co-leader after round one at -4 along with Wesley Kwok of the Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club in Scarborough, Steele was unaware that Kwok had posted a -9 total (68-67) playing ahead of him. The Kingstonian had chipped in for eagle on the 11th hole of the final round to match that total, but it was not all smooth sailing on the way to the clubhouse.

Steele took the solo lead on the 14th hole at -10 but a bogey two holes later had him facing a playoff. He eliminated that possibility with an up and down birdie from a fairway bunker on 17 and a two putt birdie on the closing par five to grab the title in style.

“I left with some great thoughts from the Ontario Am last week and carried them into here,” said Steele. “I didn’t have a day between the final round there and the first round here. I was striking it well so I just went with that and then was hoping I could make some more putts here, which I definitely did.”

“I haven’t gone that low in a two day event, or even a four day event before, so it was nice to finally get it down there and keep it going too, and not be scared of going low. In the past; I think I had been.”

Kwok Takes The B Flight

As the tournament runner-up Wesley Kwok impressed many with his rounds of 68-67. The McMaster grad who will begin graduate studies at the University of Ottawa this Fall was content with his play. It earned him top spot in B Flight.

Kwok says he made no big mistakes all weekend but also realized his total might not be enough. He was preparing for a possible playoff but admits it was a little half-hearted. “I knew he (Steele) was playing really well so I didn’t get too excited. Sure enough. he finished birdie, birdie, and won. I warmed up a bit but in the back of my mind I knew what was going to happen.”

“This definitely one of my best performances ever. It was a career round so it was a good time to be playing up here.”

Home Course Player Takes C Flight

In C Flight of the Flagstick Open the surprise winner was John Simpson. Simpson, a member of eQuinelle, bested two other players by a single stroke with his score of 159 (77-82). He snuck past Dylan Villeneuve and Paul Maniscalco.

“This was the first time I have ever played in a tournament; I really enjoyed it,” Simpson shared. “Obviously I have a bit of an advantage as a home course member here; knowing some of the breaks in the greens. I played really well yesterday and I ground it out today and had no idea I was in the mix until the end. It was great.”

Taylor Wins Senior Playoff

John Taylor used his only birdie of the day on Sunday to beat defending Flagstick Open Senior champion Perry Freda in a playoff. Both players had ended regulation play at 147; 73-74 for Taylor and 72-75 for Freda.

They each had birdie chances on the par five used for the 1st playoff hole and after Freda missed, Taylor converted his 8 foot downhill attempt. He shared the moment with his wife Judy who was his caddy.

“I putted well,” Taylor mentioned as the key to his success over the weekend. “I think you have to putt well on these greens, they’re running probably running about 11. There are no gimmes out there; you have to concentrate on everything. There are a lot of subtle little breaks and they play into the game.”

Taylor, who made sixteen pars and two bogies in his final round, was ready to play a hole under par when the playoff ensued. “I stood over my birdie putt and said ‘it’s time’,” and thankfully I made it.
