Putter Talk

Golf media expect a lot of equipment news to cross their desks at this time of year but having an abundance of putters news arrive at almost the same time yesterday struck me as rather odd.

Within an hour or so I heard from STX Golf, Odyssey Golf, and SeeMore regarding new models set to head out to retail or ready to be showcased at the upcoming PGA Merchandise Show.

9750_backStarting it all off was STX.  Their newly redesigned fixed-faced 9740 and 9750 models that were announced at the PGA Expo in the Fall are ready to ship to retailers.  The modified versions of the companies past 97 series now feature more modern lines, different finishes along with new shafts and grips.

According to STX Director of Golf Steve Henneman, “Both of these models have been extremely successful at retail. We attribute that to its appearance, performance and entry level price point. These putters have been a mainstay in our line-up and it was necessary they be updated.”

The STX 9740 Putter features a traditionally styled blade head that is machined from 17-4 stainless steel, weighs 345 grams, and incorporates a fixed patented STX elastomer face insert. All three STX face inserts will be available in the 9740; the “softest” black insert, the medium resilient red insert and firmer green insert. Its clean lines are complemented with a satin finish. This heel shafted putter has heel-toe weighting, a plumber’s neck hosel, and a step-less KBS shaft, known for its stability as well as true feedback. Both 34” and 35” lengths are offered. A custom Golf Pride V-Rad golf grip complements this transformed putter. The 9740 also comes with a custom STX collectible head cover.

Much like its originator, the STX 9750 is a heel-toe weighted putter but encompasses a unique flare neck hosel and weighs in at 340 grams. It too is machined from top quality 17-4 stainless steel and is offered in all three STX face inserts.

The classically designed 9750 blade styled head with a fine satin finish incorporates a step-less KBS shaft for a clean and modern appearance. Lengths available are 34” and 35”. A custom Golf Pride V-Rad golf grip with a semi-pistol shape adds touch and consistency with its texture and tackiness.

Next in the inbox putter parade was the new Back Series Tour Design from Odyssey Golf.  These might be the sharpest putters that the company has introduced in some time as far as pure aesthetic appeal. The milled line of putters will be available as of January 15th.

Odyssey says the putter was created via lengthy work between the Odyssey design team and professional golfers from around the globe.

BSTD_2_02_2010_5x7_rgbFeaturing a black finish, each of these putter models are milled from 1025 carbon steel for soft yet solid feel.

“In creating the Black Series Tour Designs putters, we consulted with some of the greatest players in the game, including Phil Mickelson,” said Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer for Odyssey Golf. “We incorporated this Tour player feedback into the design of these precision-crafted milled putters. The result is updated shapes and more head options preferred by better players, all delivering the truest roll possible in a premium look.”

Black Series Tour Designs putters are available in several core models, including the #2, #4, #6 and #9.

The last of the putter news came from Tennessee’s SeeMore Golf, a brand that got a lot of TV time during the first round of the SBS Championship as the cameras followed SeeMore user Zach Johnson.

The SeeMore Putter Company is launching the new mSeries DB4, which features RST2 technology. RST2 alignment technology expands the proprietary alignment benefits of SeeMore’s patented RifleScope Technology (RST) to a classic blade design with offset hosel for the first time.

image008“The new DB4, like all of the SeeMore putters before it, is one that solves one of the most fundamental problems in putting, that of consistently accurate alignment at address. It offers the confidence to make a fundamentally solid and repeatable putting stroke each and every time, said Jim Grundberg, SeeMore’s Managing Partner. “The RST2 patented alignment feature is extremely exciting in that it has been developed with the input of the world’s best tour players over the past 2 years and simply makes a great putter design better by improving a player’s ability to set up square to the intended target line.”

The DB4 is 100% milled in the USA, and is available in a platinum finish. It is also available in 100% milled carbon steel with a proprietary multi-layer black satin finish , the first of a new series called mSeries CS Gunmetal Black.
