Weekend Wrap-up – Pros & Amateurs

Brooke Henderson hits a tee shot while caddy and Women's National Team Coach Tristan Mullally looks on during round 1 of the Manulife Financial Classic.

The June 7/8 weekend was a busy one in golf.

Eastern Ontario golfers were in action on the LPGA and PGA TOUR, there were several junior golf tournaments taking place in the National Capital Region and PGA TOUR Canada played out their second event of the 2014 season.

The LPGA was playing the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in Waterloo, Ontario and while most eyes were on Inbee Park as she shot 61 on Sunday to win, there were five Canadians in the field including 16 year-old Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls.

Henderson had her best round of the week on Sunday with a 3 under par, 68.  She finished the event, to wish she received a Sponsor’s Exemption, at 6 under par (70, 71, 69, 68).  She shared 45th place.

Henderson will be back in action with the top pros of the world in another week when she plays her second consecutive United States Women’s Open Championship.  The Pinehurst Resort and the Pinehurst #2 course will host.

The PGA TOUR ended up being Canadian free for the final two rounds at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis as Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ontario and David Hearn of Brantford, Ontario both missed the cut.

Fritsch gave it his best effort to make the cut with a clap worthy effort on his final green approach.  Have a look at the video and you’ll understand.

Nicholas Brisebois of Kanata took low score honours in the Boys 15-19 Division with rounds of 74 and 75 (149).
