In 2012 Dwight Reinhart fought off Hall of Fame golfer Graham Cooke to win his 1st provincial championship – the Quebec Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

This year provided a repeat of sorts for Reinhart, a member of Eagle Creek Golf Club in Dunrobin, Ontario, as he once again bettered Cooke, the decorated veteran player, to take hold of the championship.

In the past two years this championship, held annually at the Whitlock G&CC in Hudson, Quebec, has been marred by poor weather, not allowing all three rounds to be completed.  The last time they played all 54 holes?  In 2012.

The leaderboard was tight at the 21st playing of the Men’s Championship with Cornwall’s Jordan Rochon taking over the lead from Reinhart with 9 holes to play.  Reinhart, a former touring and club professional, had owned the 36 hole lead.

Three bogies by Rochon early in the back nine let Cooke and Reinhart back into the competition with the veterans making a late surge.  Cooke birdied the final two holes, setting up the final drama.

Reinhart required a 10 foot breaking putt for  birdie on the last hole to avoid a playoff with Cooke, a six-time winner of the title.

Dwight rolled it in and earned his 2nd Golf Quebec provincial championship with scores of 74, 73, and 73.

“Not my best round but (I) made the putts when I needed. Winning the title once is great but twice is even better,” Reinhart commented to Flagstick afterward.

The top three players, Reinhart, Cooke, and Rochon will now represent Golf Québec in the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Abercrombie Country Club, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, from August 25 to 28, 2015.

Mary Ann Hayward Dominates Her Competition

As a two-time past champion and a lifetime member at host course, Whitlock G&CC, it’s no surprise that Mary Ann Hayward is a threat to contend each time she tees it up at the Golf Quebec Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

In 2014 poor weather eliminated the entire championship, robbing Hayward of the chance to defend her 2013 title.  She made up for it this year.

Hayward, the Manager of Sports Performance for the Golf Association of Ontario, opened with a six over par, 78. It was enough to establish a small lead.

That margin grew to unsurmountable during the second and final round as she opened with two birdies and rolled to an impressive round of 69.

She won by a impressive thirteen strokes.

Past champions Marie-Thérèse Torti of La Vallée du Richelieu (2004, 2007), and Hélène Chartrand of Summerlea (2012) finished tied for second place.
