Brooke Henderson is high up on the leaderboard after round one of the HSBC Women’s Championship in Singapore.
It’s no surprise, given that she is coming off three straight top ten finishes between appearances on the LPGA and LET Tours, but even so, you’d expect a player to have an off week on occasion. Not so for Brooke.
The eighteen year-old from Smiths Falls got her first ever tournament appearance in Singapore off to a strong start with a round of 70 (-2) on The Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.
Among a field that includes nearly all the best players in the world, Henderson shares 12th place. She is three strokes off the pace of leaders Candie King and Minjee Lee.
Within her nine hole scores of 36 and 34 Brooke liberally mixed in bogeys and bogeys. After an opening bogey she fought back with birdies on the sixth and seven holes and then sprinkled in three more birdies on the back nine.
In doing so she hit 11 of 14 fairways but, uncharacteristically, found just 11 greens in regulation. If she can improve on that mark she will certainly have a better chance to get herself in contention for the lead.
Henderson tees off for round two at 7:56 p.m. EST on Thursday.
