In 125 years of existence, historical events have been no stranger to the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. The club located in Gatineau, Quebec has been witness to everything from the founding of the PGA of Canada to the beginnings of Golf Canada, and the playing of the first Canadian Amateur itself.

Another milestone was added at the venerable club on Tuesday as a team from Newfoundland and Labrador became the first ever men’s or women’s team from Atlantic Canada to win a national team golf title. Ever.

The feat was accomplished as Gander, Newfoundland native Blair Bursey continued to hold the lead at the 112th Canadian Men’s Amateur after rounds of 64 and 69 at the Eagle Creek (Dunrobin, ON) and Royal Ottawa Golf Cubs, respectively.

Bursey joined teammates Nathan Peters and Chuck Conley is securing the team title with a 3-under par, 281 total.

“I’m really proud to be from where I’m from and to always represent my province,” said Bursey. “Being a little different and growing up in Newfoundland, trying to play college golf and high-level amateur golf out of Newfoundland has been difficult at times with the weather and the season, but the people back there are so good and so supportive.

“This will be a big deal back there. To win the Willingdon Cup and to do something that hasn’t been done before for Newfoundland is awesome and quite a pleasure for not only myself, but also Chuck, Nathan, our other teammates and everyone who has helped get us here.”

Nathan Peters of St. John’s, N.L., backed up the thoughts of his teammate on the win.

“It’s definitely something really cool. Growing up playing golf in Newfoundland, you only ever really expect to just play in nationals and winning anything is very far-fetched. The golf courses were extremely beautiful and winning the Willingdon Cup is pretty incredible.”

Team Ontario finished second to Newfoundland and Labrador in team play, just two strokes off the pace. Alberta and Quebec shared third.

With the team event wrapped up Bursey can now turn his attention back to seeking the individual title, a feat the 19 year-old is a step closer to after his 69 at Royal Ottawa Golf Club pushed him into a two-stroke lead over Andy Zhang of China.

Bursey, who plays collegiate golf at Utah Valley State and won the NCAA Bandon Dunes Championship earlier this year, does not seem phased by the grandness of this stage.

“I’ve been a winner at other levels. Junior golf and college…amateur golf is the next step. I feel like I’m in a good place in my development where my game is starting to be at a place where it’s ready to win some bigger tournaments.

“That’s not to say I’m going to go ahead and win this week, but it’s all a learning experience. I’ve never made the cut at this tournament before, so it’s a new experience at a top-level amateur tournament. I’m not afraid of it at all. That’s why I practice and this is why I play the game. I love the feeling of being near the top and certainly being at the top. I’m definitely looking forward to the next couple of days.”

The round of the day went to Team Canada member Hugo Bernard who is no stranger to the Royal Ottawa Golf Club where he has played the Alexander of Tunis tournament. On Tuesday Bernard, of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC, fashioned a round of 64, 6-under par. It vaulted him into a share of third along with Chris Crisologo of British Columbia.

The 36-hole cut came at 5 over par.

77 players advance to the final 36 holes to be played at Royal Ottawa Golf Club.
