Spend some time in Hawaii and the name “Kalea” is comes up often. As a visitor you may not understand its meaning but ask a local and they’ll be sure to explain it with a smile on their face.

Kalea – straight out means: “bright; to bring joy”…

It proves to be a well-researched name by TaylorMade when you consider the look and intentions of their new “Kalea” women’s golf product line, their first in more than a decade.

The company says this full set of clubs is intended “to deliver meaningful performance to female players”. If it succeeds it will surely bring joy to them and live up to its name.

At the same time it carries with it “soft” look and finish that should appeal to a wide range of customers.

Primarily though, it appears to be a set that relies less on appearance and more on design features that will benefit golfers in this often found in this class of player.

Embedded within are lofts optimized to provide useful yardage gaps for players with lower swing and ball speeds. To aid this TaylorMade designers used low and rearward centre of gravity locations, shafts with smaller tip diameters (you can also see this in the Blue club line of sister company Adams Golf), and slot technology to increase ball speeds across a larger area of the face.

“We’ve learned a great deal about product performance in the last decade, much of which was geared toward faster swing speeds,” said Tomo Bystedt, Senior Director of Product Creation. “For us, Kalea was a great opportunity to take our learnings on slower swing speeds and bring them to market with products that provide meaningful performance for female players, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.”

There are 13 clubs available in the Kalea collection including a driver, 3, 5 and 7 fairway woods, 4 & 5 Rescues, 6 & 7 transition irons, 8 & 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter.

At the heart of the club options will be an 8-piece combo set with 4-5 rescues, 6-7 transition irons and an 8 iron through sand wedge in cavity backed irons. The additional clubs are available individually to allow golfers to create a set make-up that best suits their game.

Additional Kalea options are a putter, cart bag and a low-compression 2-piece golf ball.

The entire Kalea line will show up a retail on December 6, 2015.
