Golf Travel: Romantic Golf Destinations

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Resort

With St. Valentine’s Day upon us, and a golf season ahead, you might be thinking of making a golf trip with your significant other. There are plenty of destinations available for golf trips, but not all offer an atmosphere conducive to couples.

Here are a trio:

Charleston, South Carolina

Historic buildings, modern restaurants, cobblestone streets, and peaceful fairways mark Charleston, South Carolina, one of the earliest settlements in the United States.

While Charleston has blossomed in size through the years, it retains a small city feel with a downtown isolated by water surrounds. Cross a bridge into the heart of the town though and you get a sense of going back in time once you spot the statuesque trees and period architecture.

Couples can choose to stay in town and enjoy boutique hotels, some of the finest dining in the United States, and a place where walking around is easy and brings many rewards. Golf forays are close at hand, and even more so if you choose to put down stakes for your trip at destinations like the The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort. The exquisite hotel is built along ocean shores and serves up the opportunity to bike on the beach, lie by the pool, and head out to their multiple golf courses, including the famed Ocean Course or fairways that are more friendly to emerging golfers.

Hot Tip? While in Charleston, hit a rooftop bar and enjoy spectacular views while you have drinks or dinner.

Half Moon Bay, California

There is no shortage of hustle and bustle in California, but there are also more isolated places where you can enjoy the beauty of the west coast with a good helping of serenity.

One of those of Half Moon Bay, where a Ritz Carlton Resort allows you to soak up all the beauty in a majestic setting.

Half Moon Bay has been an escape for more than 100 years and still retains its small town charm that first attracted people to the beach here. Now, surfers, golfers, and those looking for a peaceful weekend dominate the scene, which remains uncrowded.

The hotel itself is something right out of a movie, perched on a cliffside locale high above the Pacific Ocean. The water’s presence alone puts you at peace, and the ability to play a few holes on their aptly named Ocean Course is an extra reward for any level of golf fan.

It’s also a great home base for excursions around the San Francisco and Santa Cruz areas.

Borga Egnanzia, Fasano, Italy

Located on the Adriatic Sea on the east coast of Italy, Borgo Egnanzia is a small hotel ideal for a couples getaway. The resort includes the San Domenico golf course but the real attraction is the 45 acres that encompass the 28 villas, 63 hotel rooms, and the Vair spa.

Celebrity watchers will note that this was the location that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chose for their 2012 wedding. One can assume that Justin, an avid golfer, may have snuck in a few holes during their visit.

Particularly attractive to guests at the resort is the option of Italian Cooking lessons available on-site at Trattoria Mia Cucina kitchen, one of their five restaurants.
