A ton of Canadian golf fans left the recent PGA Championship at Oak Hill Golf & Country Club in Rochester, New York with autographs and great memories, but one family from the National Capital Region got a little bit more out of the experience.

The Sutherlands, who play out of the Mississippi Golf Club near Carleton Place (east of Ottawa), made the journey to Oak Hill, including younger sons Mark and Eric.  The boys were set to watch golf by some of the best players in the game and maybe collect a few autographs.  They got the autographs, and something a little extra from PGA Tour member Billy Horschel.

As mother Janet tells it when Horschel walked past them after his round, he said – “Do you want something different?” to the boys, who were seeking a signature. He then gave one of his size 11 & ½ shoes to Mark Sutherland and his other shoe to another young spectator.

While most people might take the prize souvenir and put it on display somewhere, young Mark, who happens to also wear a size 11.5, had other ideas.

On Monday the junior was competing at the Ottawa Valley Golf Association Junior Intersectionals finals at eQuinelle Golf Club and for fun, he wore his own left shoe and paired it up with the right one provided by the pro.

Mark, who plays to an index of 15, earned two points in the matches and helped his Mississippi team to a second place finish.

Word is that younger brother Eric is coveting the Horschel donation and trying to negotiate a purchase from the older sibling.

Whether that happens or not, the entire family will have a story to tell about the 95th PGA Championship for a long time to come.
