Phil Howlett of Belleville is going Goofy!
A Loyalist College Justice Studies professor and avid golfer, Phil is training to participate in the Walt Disney World GOOFY CHALLENGE as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada’s Team In Training (TNT).
What is The Goofy? It’s a run of 13.1 miles on January 7th and 26.2 miles on January 8th, 2012.
Phil agrees, “you have to be a bit Goofy to do it, but the real reason we run is that every TNT member raises funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.”
Running to honour the memory of his friends Adrian Facca and John Regan, and also to honour Mike Tully and all individuals who are battling blood cancers, Phil says that, “Adrian, John and Mike are the real heroes. They provide the inspiration, I just provide the perspiration.” And he needs your support to cross the ultimate finish line – a cure.
With the kind cooperation of several local courses, Phil is doing a golf marathon to raise money and awareness on Friday, September 30th.
Phil and his partner Kim Tully will start early Friday morning at Camden Braes G&CC near Odessa, Ontario where Phil will play 18 holes and run between shots as part of his training. Kim will be his coach/caddie, and collecting donations from golfers. And then they will do the same thing at Briar Fox G&CC in Marysville, Ontario, some 30 kilometres to the west.
36 holes in one day is a lot of golf, right? Nope. Not for this team. They’ll also play 18 holes at Bay of Quinte G&CC in Belleville, 9 holes at Bayview GC just down the road from Bay of Quinte, and finish up with another 36 holes at their home course, Trillium Wood.
You have to be a little bit crazy to play 99 holes of golf in a week. But playing that much in one day? On foot?
That’s just Goofy. And Phil Howlett is up to the task.
