Royal Quebec Golf Club hosted the Golf Quenec Duke of Kent Championship this past week for the 90th time. As has been a tradition in many past final rounds of the 36-holer tournament, a low score on the final day determined the winner.

Chicoutimi’s Anthony Jomphe was trailing by four strokes headed into the last day on July 3rd after starting with a 70. Playing on his home course, Jonathan Vermette had opened with a score of 66 but a second round of 73 opened the foor for others to advance on him.

Jomphe took full advantage of the possibility, using a bogey-free 67 to reach -7 overall and claim the title. Vermette had to settle for a share of second alongside fellow Royal Quebec member William Forgues.

“Being behind the leaders, I knew it would take me a good day to hope to climb back up. I was aggressive and it paid off, I’m very happy with my victory”, commented the champion to Golf Quebec staff.

Jomphe now faces the challenge that has yet to be conquered since it started in 1950. As the winner of the first leg of the Golf Quebec Triple Crown, only he has a chance to complete it this season by also winning the Alexander of Tunis and the Men’s Provincial Amateur Championship.

He’ll get his chance this coming week at The Alexander of Tunis Championshio which will be hosted by the Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau, QC on July 8/9. The Men’s Provincial Amateur Championship will follow from July 15 to 18, at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke.

The three leaders on the Triple Crown Order of Merit will have the opportunity to take part in the 119th Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, presented by BDO, as part of the inter-provincial team. That National Championship will be contested in Saskatoon, Sask., August 3-8 and hosted by the Riverside Country Club and Saskatoon Golf and Country Club.,

Jean-Philippe Parr (Ki-8-Eb) and Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu) will automatically make the Quebec provincial team, as they are both members of the national amateur squad. The remaining spots in the provincial quota will be awarded under the Triple Crown Order of Merit.

The top finisher from the National Capital Region at the Duke of Kent was Ben Sheridan of the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club in a share of 11th place.
