There was much talk about professional golf last week among the members of the Golf Journalists Association of Canada who were attending the PGA Merchandise Show in Florida. Much of it centered on events in our own backyard.
Word had spread that Synchro Sports, the group behind the very successful Desjardins Montreal Open on the Canadian Tour, were taking their tournament participation in another direction – to an older crowd.
An email received today that says there will be a press conference this Thursday in Montreal by the PGA Champions Tour and Synchro Sports all but assures where this story is heading.
Yes, it looks as if the Champions Tour will be coming to Montreal as early as this summer. Speculation has the event being playing in the first week of July, immediately follwing the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, New York.
That seems logical as it is an easy trip to Montreal from there. It would also still leave a two-week gap prior to the Senior British Open for those players wishing to have some extra preparation time.
This will be a great opportunity for the avid Montreal (and National Capital) golf fans to see the best of the older crowd in action. Those players also now include Tom Watson, Fred Couples and Corey Pavin so the potential star appeal of the field could be high.
We’ll provide more details on Thursday as the press conference plays out.
