CJGA Team Canada Wins 7th Annual Stephen Ames Cup

Calgary, Alta. (August 19, 2011) – Day three of the 2011 Stephen Ames Cup concluded today at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary. Both CJGA Team Canada and Trinidad & Tobago entered the final day of competition with a shot at taking home the title, but the Canadians proved too much for their Caribbean counterparts. CJGA Team Canada won five of the eight singles matches to beat Trinidad 10 ½ to 5 ½ and retain the title.

“I’m really proud of our players,” said John Lawrence, CJGA Team Canada manager.

“They played great as a team and showed why they were picked to represent Canada. Winning for the first time in Calgary and at Canyon Meadows is very satisfying and we’re looking forward to defending the cup next year in Trinidad”.

In the opening match of the day, Alyssa Getty of Leamington, Ont. beat Christina Ferriera 5&3 to remain undefeated for the tournament.  She continued her strong play from the first two days of competition and kept the pressure on her opponent from start to finish.

In match two, Calgary native Sabrine Garrison dispatched Ysabelle Lawrence 7&6. Like her playing partner from day one and two, Garrison remained calm under pressure and played a great round of golf.  Lawrence had the shot of the match holing out from the fairway for eagle.

In match three, Marlies Klekner-Alt of Ottawa held on to pick up a point for Canada. With a 3UP lead over her opponent Aleema Jack heading into No. 16, Jack won the next two holes, but was unable to complete the comeback on No. 18 and Canada picked up a full point 1 UP.

Natalya Rahamatula put the first point on the board for the Trinidad & Tobago side in match four.  A returning player from the victorious 2009 squad, Rahamatula was not backing down and defeated her opponent Grace Howie 3&2.

In match five, Wan Ju Lee of Trinidad defeated Kyle MacDonald of Canada 2UP. A tight match from start to finish, Lee came through in the clutch to pull away and pick up his team’s second point of the day.

Patrick Murphy of Crossfield, Alta. defeated Matthew Marquez 6&5 in match six. Murphy put together a solid round not letting his opponent get close in the match.

Talin Rajendranath of Trinidad beat Kieran Standen of Edmonton 3&1 in the seventh match of the day. Both players participated in a pressure-packed match yesterday and didn’t disappoint this afternoon.  After competing in five Stephen Ames Cup events, Rajendranath captured his final match of Stephen Ames Cup as he will be too old to return next season.

Match eight featured Blair Hamilton of Burlington, Ont. and Jessel Mohammed of Trinidad & Tobago. Hamilton, playing in his second consecutive event after travelling to Trindad last summer proved to be too much for Mohammed, taking the match 6&5.

“It was another tough day,” said Scott Anderson, Team Trinidad & Tobago manager. “We have the talent, but talent can only take you so far. They are the best junior golfers back home, but were faced with a new challenge here. The weather conditions were tough on us and our fundamentals were lacking.”

“That being said, I would like to complement Natalya, Wan Ju and Talin for winning their matches. They were under a lot of pressure and were up against a very high quality of competition.”
