St. Thomas, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Team British Columbia combined for a team-total 448 today in southern Ontario to win the Phil Farley Memorial inter-provincial team title at the 49th playing of the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship.

Team British Columbia, consisting of Brian DeBiasio of Nelson, Real Gamache of Quesnel, Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody and Brock Waldron of Kelowna combined for a two-round total 448 (226-222—448, +16) to capture the title.

“It feels great and we have a good team,” said Lindbjerg, Team Captain.

“It’s a two day competition where you have to just go out and do your best. Play hole-by-hole, these guys know how to do it. We’re all good friends, so there’s a good team chemistry.”

Team Alberta entered the second round sitting in fifth place, but pulled into second with a strong finish today. Consisting of Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Ron Kelly of Calgary, Floyd Kilgore of Grimshaw and Tom Skinner of Red Deer combined for a two-day total 459 (236-223—459, +27).

Finishing in third was Team Nova Scotia consisting of Ed Dumeah of Halifax, Bruce Fagan of Kentville, Graham MacIntyre of Windsor Junction and Gerry MacMillan of Kingston. The team total was 460.

The Inter-provincial Team Championship for the Phil Farley Memorial trophy features four-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play.  Each day, the best three of four scores count towards the overall team total.

In the Men’s Senior competition, carding 3 birdies today, Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC maintained his lead after shooting an even par round 72 for a two-day total of 141 (-3).

“The conditions and the pins are tougher today, there’s more wind and the greens are dry,” said Simson.

“I made a couple mistakes, but other than that I’m fairly pleased with my round. I was very fortunate to make a bogey on 7, I hit my second shot over the green and it was not looking like we would find it. I had a lot of opportunities to make birdie but I didn’t take advantage of them – 72 isn’t bad though!”

In second place heading into the third round tomorrow is Michael Mealia of Thornhill, Ont., who carded 1-over par 72 to sit at a two-round total of 145 (+1); while four time champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., is tied in third place with Howard Broun of Calgary, Alt., both with 146 (+2).

Bob Fugere of Gatineau, Quebec, despite shooting 76, actually advanced 7 places and is now tied for 11th.

There was a tie in the Super Senior competition that resulted in crowning of two players, Terry Townend of St-Lazare of Que., and Tom Liljeholm of Prineville, OR. Both finished with a two-day total of 159 (+15). In second was Phillip Leckey of Tampa, FL with 160 (+16).  Gerry Manale of North Gower finished in 18th place.

Play continues at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship Thursday with the third round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The final round is scheduled for Friday.

The Canadian Men’s Senior Champion will earn an exemption into the USGA Senior Championship at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, October 2-7, in Orlando, FL.
