If you attended the Ottawa-Gatineau Golf Expo a couple weekends back you might have been surprised to see the presence of the Golf Association of Ontario (GAO) who had a booth at the show.

It’s surprising to those in golf as many of you are aware that the local golf association, the Ottawa Valley Golf Association, is affiliated with Golf Quebec.

And before you begin to believe that this is some sort of turf war, think again.

With golf being an official sport in Canada, the GAO is recognized as the Ontario avenue to provide programming that is supported, in part, by Ontario tax dollars.  As such, they are required to offer these programs in ALL parts of Ontario – no matter the boundaries or affiliations of golf organizations.  Some of these programs include the Callaway Golf In The Schools Program as well as Athlete Assistance programs.

It’s a big issue that needs a lot of explaining and to do our part we have been meeting with various golf officials of late to provide the details.  You can expect a large news story in the May print issue of Flagstick.

A big congratulations goes out to the boys of Quagmire Golf.  The upstart, far-from traditional clothing company that is headed by Geoff Tait and Bobby Pasternak recently sealed the deal to overhaul the aging Arnold Palmer clothing brand.  The proposed collections look fabulous and the formal announcement for the project was made this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando.

For a few takes on the deal see what Rick Young of Score had to say here, and also what the Man In The Black Hat at Chapeau Noir Golf wrote here.

Also on the fashion side of things, did you happen to see this video of Jack Nicklaus that was making the rounds online the other day.  Nicklaus, who is just a few weeks away from celebrating the 25th anniversary of his 1986 Masters victory, was playing with Graeme McDowell at PGA National on Monday in the tournament to support Ernie Els’ foundation to benefit Autism awareness.  It’s great to not only see Mr. Nicklaus on the course but is a casual mode wearing shorts and yep, you may have guessed it, ECCO Street Premier golf shoes.  Those are the same kicks Freddy Couples made famous at Augusta National last year.

Watch for some interesting posts from me next week.  On Wednesday, March 30th I’ll be on a plane headed to the Portland, Oregon area to a visit Nike headquarters.  The trip is centred around the new Nike Golf ball introduction, the 20XI, but we’ll have a chance to catch up with a variety of their key personnel.  It’s the 20th anniversary of the company’s Dri-Fit clothing and so we’ll try and get some content related to that as well.  Watch for Tweets, Blog, Videos, Audio, and Stories from the 4 day journey.
