On a teleconference with media this morning three-time Champions Tour winner Jay Haas confirmed that he will be back in Canada this year for a return visit to the Montreal Championship presented by Desjardins.

Haas, who has captured nine PGA TOUR titles to go along with 14 wins on the Champions Tour, joins an impressive list of Champions Tour legends set to tee it up in the $1.8 million USD championship June 27 to July 3 at scenic Club de golf Le Fontainebleau in Blainville, Quebec.

Among the stars already committed to the 2011 Montreal Championship is 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples, 13-time PGA TOUR winner Mark Calcavecchia and Champions Tour career wins leader Hale Irwin.

“We couldn’t be happier than to announce the addition of Jay Haas to the Montreal Championship,” stated David Skitt, who returns for a second year as Tournament Director.

“Jay came extremely close to winning the first edition of the championship, and we look forward to welcoming him back to Montreal this summer.”

Haas, who finished T5 in the inaugural Montreal Championship, will be back looking to claim the $270,000 USD winner’s cheque. To date, eight of the top nine finishers from the 2010 championship have committed to this summer’s tournament.

Following his top five finish in Montreal in 2010, Haas travelled overseas and placed T8 at the Senior Open Championship in Scotland.

Haas’ three major championship triumphs on the Champions Tour came at the Senior PGA Championship in 2006 and 2008 as well as the 2009 Senior Players Championship. Throughout his storied career, Haas has also played for the U.S. Ryder Cup squad three times (1983, 1995, 2004) and the Presidents Cup team twice (1994, 2003).

Earlier this spring, Haas placed T5 at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. Five years ago, Haas was honoured with the Bobby Jones Award, the highest honour given by the USGA, in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
