Henderson Grabs 2nd Futures Links Title

When you talk of young golfing prospects in Canada today you need look no further than MacKenzie Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls,Ontario.

Over the weekend the 13 year-old added to her growing trophy shelf with an impressive victory at the CN Future Links Ontario Championship at Deerhurst Highlands Resort in Huntsville, Ontario.  Her final round score of two under par, 71, pushed her to a four shot win over National Developmental Team Member, 18 year-old Augusta James of Bath, Ontario.  For the three rounds of play Brooke shot 73-73-71-227.

It would be outstanding if this was the first big win for Henderson but in fact she easily becomes the youngest player to have won both the Ontario and Quebec Future Links titles, having accomplished the latter last year at the tender age of 12.

“I had some nerves coming into the final round but I was able to putt well and keep my driver under control. The tournament ended with the perfect result. This is such a great feeling,” said Henderson, who plans to play in more CN Future Links championships. “…I am very excited to win a tournament of this size. I hope to play in the CN Future Links Quebec Championship next, and I want to keep practicing hard so that I can enjoy the same result in that tournament too.”

On the boys side of the action it was another former Future Links winner who took top spot in Ontario.  Wilson Bateman of Edmonton won the Boys Division, his second straight Future Links title after having won the Pacific Championship in British Columbia last month.

Trailing second-round leader Un Cho of Ancaster, Ont. by three strokes heading into Sunday’s finale, Bateman, a native of Edmonton and a member of Team Canada’s Development Squad, made a pair of eagles and three birdies on the day, carding a final round 5-under par (67) for a four-stroke victory over Team Canada Development Squad teammate  Adam Svensson.

“I feel like I have a lot more confidence this season. I worked hard on my game in Florida all winter and have been hitting the gym regularly,” said Bateman of his off-season training. “Last year was more of a learning year for me with multiple runner-up finishes. This year I got a new putter which has taken a lot of pressure off the rest of my game. I always feel like winning breeds winning so I plan to use this momentum to play well in the Junior Boys and Men’s Canadian Amateur Championships.”
