Keel, Chan Lead Future Links Pacific Championship

Cobble Hill, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Team Canada Development Squad member Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., and Curtis Chan of Richmond, B.C., sit atop the leaderboard in the Junior Girls and Junior Boys divisions respectively through the opening round of the CN Future Links Pacific Championship at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill, B.C.

On the girls side, Keel, 15, carded an even-par 71 that included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 12th hole for a three-stroke lead over Josee Doyon, 18, of St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que.

“I hit my driver into the first cut of rough and then I hit my hybrid to about 12 feet,” Keel said, describing her eagle convert at No. 12. “I was left with a hard putt, downhill on a slider, but I managed to make it. The ball stopped at the edge of the hole and trickled in to save me a few strokes.”

Keel ultimately credits her success through 18 holes of play, however, to a consistent short-game.

“The course played extremely hard and the pin placements were difficult today,” Keel explained. “I pulled off the round because of my putting. My shots weren’t as good as I wanted them to be so putting was key.”

Team Canada Development Sqaud members Leilanie Kim, 18, of Surrey B.C. finished T3, four strokes off the lead at +4, while Mississauga’s Brogan McKinnon, 16, finished T6. Augusta James, 18, of Bath, Ont. and Taylor Kim, 16, of Surrey, B.C., both ended the day T9.

In the Junior Boys division, Chan, 14, shot an even-par 70 that featured back-to-back birdies on the 9th and 10th holes. The 2010 British Columbia Juvenile Boys champion holds a one shot lead over Team Canada Development Squad member Wilson Bateman, 17, of Spruce Grove, Alb., who carded a one-over 71 that included an eagle on the par-4 2nd hole.

Defending CN Future Links Pacific champion and Team Canada Development Squad member, Adam Svensson, 17, of Surrey, B.C., shot a two-over 72 to finish T3, while teammate Richard Jung, 18, of Toronto, carded a six-over 76, ending the day at T18.

The second round of the CN Future Links Pacific Championship tees off Saturday at 7:00 am PST.
