Yes, I am still alive. I admit, it has been a week and far too long since I’ve minced a few words here but I assure I was working on a lot of other things.
For those who celebrate I hope Easter was good to you. I managed not to let a single piece of chocolate pass my lips – easier to do when you have a wife and daughter who love the stuff!
We’ve been hard at work prepping the May print issue of Flagstick Golf Magazine (our 15th anniversary issue) and that, as well as a lot of other projects, have kept me from here from the last week. The May issue will be out on May 6th.
– The Flagstick Shootout is ready to rock for the May 28/29th weekend at the Smuggler’s Glen Golf Club. We’re proud to say we have one of the best fields yet for this event that is in just its third year. 72 top male amateur golfers will battle out for the title that Joe Matthews won in 2010. That includes the defending champion and other leading contenders like 2009 champ Allen McGee of Ottawa and Dwight Reinhart of Renfrew.
-After a lot of requests I can share that we are in the very early beta stages of a Flagstick Mobile App. We will try and keep you updated on the progress.
-Nike Golf with bust out their 20XI golf balls on Friday, April 29th. We have some special content related to the event that you will find on Flagstick.com in the next couple of days. I just finished a podcast this afternoon that will be matched with a photo slideshow from my visit last month to the Nike Golf R&D facility in Portland, Oregon. Watch for a couple stories on the new product as well. It’s a big launch for the company and one we know you want more information on, based on the emails and tweets we have received.
-In other product news a review of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB irons is just about complete and we hope to share that soon. Inclement weather delayed the outdoor, on-course testing portion of our evaluation.
-Down in New Orleans this week the PGA Tour is playing the Zurich Classic. We have a tournament preview up on our Tee Shots section. You can found it at this link. Regional pro Matt McQuillan is in the field this week and is hoping to make his second cut of the season in his rookie year on the PGA Tour. He tees off at 8:30 a.m. central time on Thursday.
-Flagstick Publisher Jeff Bauder and myself will be in attendance next week at the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame ceremonies in Uxbridge, Ontario. Most people from eastern Ontario do not realize that people from their neck of the woods are eligible for this hall that is administered by the GAO. Well, they are, so if you have somebody you think is worthy do not be afraid to contact the Golf Association of Ontario to find out more on the nomination process.
-The Canadian Professional Golf Tour has a number of new initiatives for 2011 and I am happy to be part of one of them. Starting next week with the Mexican PGA Championship they will have a panel providing picks for each week that a tour event is on and I glad to contribute for this season. Be sure to check the Canadian Tour website to see who the panel points out as a front runner and who they determine to be a dark horse with a chance to win.
Now back to work for me…the June print issue of Flagstick is already in the works….
