My Top Ten For 2013

toptenI remind myself everyday how fortunate I am to have golf in my life.  As long as I have worked around the game I still have to pinch myself sometimes about what I get to do everyday.  Yes, it’s my job but I’ll always just be a golf fan at heart.

2013 was another amazing year and to cap off the season I thought I would lay out ten big personal moments as a permanent reminder of the year.

There is no particular order to the list, save for the #1.

– Playing the storied Atlantic City Country Club with friend and fellow Golf Journalist Association of Canada member Adam Stanley – followed by lunch among the wooden lockers of the men’s grill.

– A lunchtime chat with 2-time PGA Championship winner Dave Stockton, Sr, and son Dave Stockton, Jr.  Their generosity in sharing their accumulated knowledge was more than appreciated.

– Thanks to Nike Golf having a chance to conduct a one on one sit-down interview with Rory McIlroy just days before he won the Australian Open.  He couldn’t have been more genuine.

– Passing my Playing Ability Test for the PGA of Canada, and subsequently receiving my membership card in the mail.  The golf journey continues.

– Calling an audible and making an unexpected road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas with friends to catch the finals of the Remax World Long Drive Championships.  Live on the Golf Channel and contested at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it was a heck of an evening.

– Getting to play Troon North in Scottsdale, Arizona – a golf course I had played a million times in video games.  Even though my laser rangefinder was stolen there, it could not spoil the day.

– Helping re-launch the official golf publication for the Golf Association of Ontario under the original name, Ontario Golf News.  It was a ton of work to make it happen but a proud moment for both myself and friend/publisher, Jeff Bauder.

– Attending the 20th anniversary of the Links of Crowbush Cove in my ancestral family Canadian home, Prince Edward Island.  Having Premier Robert Ghiz in the foursome made it a pretty cool day.  The only thing better was sharing the fun with my wife Michelle on our anniversary.

– A sweeping one, but every one of the golf-based conversations I had with golfers throughout the year.  As the Harvey Penick line goes, “If you play golf, you’re my friend.”  I always seem to find plenty of them.

– And #1?  After four years of lessons having my seven year-old daughter make the leap to the golf course.  Watching her play holes beside me (and asking to return days later) was totally surreal.

Looking forward to having golf provide more great moments in my life in 2014.

I hope the same for you.
