(Brockville, Ontario) Matthew O’Neill, Assistant Professional at Angus Glen GC is the latest Medallist in the Chase the Dream qualifiers for The Great Waterway Classic, a Canadian Tour event that will be played at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course this September.

Matthew took a conservative game plan into the competition at the Brockville Country Club on Sunday, July 15th and shot a two over par 74 to lead a field of 18 players. Tom Dickson of Gananoque finished in 2nd place with 76. Matt Washburn, formerly of Brockville, and now working in Toronto made his return home successful with a 3rd place 78. Rounding out the top 4 finishers was Zac Wood of Ottawa, a member of Executive Golf’s “Slammer Tour”. These four players now move on and will play in the final qualifier at Smuggler’s Glen on Sunday, August 26th.

On a hot, humid day the Brockville Country Club was the real winner with none of the players able to avoid the “big number” at least once on their scorecards. David Dargie. Tournament Director for The Great Waterway Classic observed, “It is always interesting to see how players who are unfamiliar with the Brockville Country Club compete at this relatively short course. Too many times today, we saw the competitors trying to attack this course, rather than playing a placement game. Congratulations to Matthew O’Neill for his patience and shot making today. Like the other three qualifiers, he waited for the course to show where the opportunities for good scoring existed.”

Despite the recent lack of rain, the Brockville Country Club was in great condition with firm, fast fairways and smooth, quick greens. The players, spectators, volunteers and Evolution Golf staff all remarked how well this golf course has withstood the heat and humidity of the past few weeks.

The Brockville Country Club event was the third of six stops in the Chase the Dream series that began on June 3rd at Upper Canada Golf Course. The next event will be held at Loyalist Golf & Country Club  on July 29th. The remaining two tournaments will be held at Turning Stone Golf Resort in Verona, New York on August 5th and Black Bear Ridge GC on August 12th. The top four finishers from each event will be joined by two qualifiers from the Evolution Golf – St. Lawrence Junior Tour and the top two Ontario qualifiers from the Canadian Junior Golf Association to form a field of 28 golfers at Smuggler’s Glen GC to play for 3 exemptions into The Great Waterway Classic.
