Orlando Scorcher – Baryla Fires 61 At Q-School

– Baryla and McQuillan Heat Up The Course At PGA Tour Q-School-

On a day when hand warmers and an extra layer of clothing was the norm, two Canadian pro’s showed that warm temperatures were not required to have their games on point.

Moving forward each day is an essential at the grueling six-round PGA Tour Qualifying School final stage and Chris Baryla and Matt McQuillan did just that, and then some, during Thursday’s second round at the Orange County National Golf Center near Orlando, Florida.  With short daylight the entire field must get into play early and that meant rounds that started as temperatures hovered just a few degrees above freezing this morning.  Thankfully the weather heated up, and so to did a couple Canadian pros.

Baryla, born in Calgary but raised in Vernon, B.C., blew the doors off the place with an unbelievable round of 11 under par, 61 over the Crooked Cat Course, the longer but slightly more defenseless of the two courses in play this week.  Baryla made it look like a local muni rather than a near 7,500-yard PGA Tour quality layout with his barrage of 11 birdies that boosted him from a tie for 65th all the way to the top of the leaderboard.

The 28 year-old University of Texas – El Paso graduate already has status on the PGA Tour for 2011 – he has a major medical extension due to a hip injury incurred last year when he was exempt on the Tour,  but the comfort of a full card will make life much easier if he can maintain his position in the top 25 players and ties this week.

One other player eagerly playing for a spot in that top placing is Matt McQuillan of Kingston, Ontario.  The Oklahoma State and University of Georgia product added a five under par 67 on Thursday to his opening 70.  That puts him at six under par, four strokes back of Baryla but in a tie for 10th place overall.  After round one he was tied for 25th in the field that now numbers 162 players after a few withdrawals.
