There was an abundance of junior golf being played at the Mississippi Golf Club in Carleton Place in mid August. On Monday, August 13, junior golfers from Ottawa Valley Golf Association member clubs qualified for spots in the match play round on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 14-15.
In the junior girls division, two club-mates from Rideau View took to the links with Paxton Mayer emerging victorious over Victoria Murray with a 4 & 3 win.
Mississippi team-mates James Parsons and Calvin Wilson took on each other in one under 13 semi-final while Eagle Creek’s Jake Bryson played Jared Coyle from Carleton Golf & Yacht Club in the other semi-final. Jake Bryson was the winner over OVGA City & District under 13 Champion James Parsons by a 1-up margin. Based on their play during the final, these kids will be around for a while. Mr. Bryson is a student at Stonecrest Elementary who has been playing competitive golf for 4 years and is a product of the Kevin Haime Golf Initiative.
Rideau View Country Club junior Isaac Lieff defeated Rivermead Golf Club’s Nicholas Caron 2&1 for the Ottawa Valley Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship Trophy. Isaac was the winner of the 2011 junior club championship at Rideau View and is looking forward to the upcoming junior club championship. A student at Sir Robert Borden H.S., Isaac defeated Hylands Josh Goheen (5&4), Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s Chris Packman (2&1) and Eagle Creek’s Nicholas Brisebois (3&1) on his way to the final. Nicholas Caron defeated Mississippi’s Joey Irvin (1 up), Rivermead’s Dylan McNamara (3&2) and Rivermead’s Nolan Windsor (19 holes) on the way to the final.
Both players played well throughout the tournament with little to choose between the two.
Other competitors making the match play round of the competition were Mississippi’s Carson Scissons, Dillon Elder and Thomas Rowbotham, Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s Michael Hunter, Pakenham Highlands’ Sadler Kubiseski, Pembroke’s Mark Parsonage and Renfrew’s Stephane Pare and Cooper Brown (2012 City & District Junior Champion & 2011 Junior Match Play Champion).
The future of golf in the Ottawa Valley looks pretty secure with the talent seen at the Mississippi Golf Club in the OVGA Junior Medal and Match Play competition.
