PGA TOUR Canada Releases 2013 Schedule

The PGA TOUR Canada has released their preliminary 2013 schedule

After committing to release their 2013 schedule in the month of January, the PGA TOUR of Canada did so today, but apparently it’s not quite complete yet.  The schedule includes seven confirmed events with the tour stating that at least one additional event will be announced later this year.

The current slate sees the former Canadian Tour launch it’s first season under the PGA TOUR umbrella in June and wrapping up in September.

PGA TOUR Canada Q-School will be conducted April 7-12 at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (The Legends and The Champions courses) in Beaumont, California.  The tour says details about registration for that event will be available soon.

“We are pleased to announce the inaugural schedule of PGA TOUR Canada,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “This Tour presents a tremendous opportunity for the growth of the game in Canada and we’re excited about the future of this tour in the coming years.”

The biggest boost for the TOUR this year will not just be the $150,000 purses at each event but what the top five players will earn at the end of the season. The five leaders on the Order of Merit at the end of the schedule will earn playing status for the 2014 Web.com Tour, with the top player receiving exempt status for the season. Players finishing 6-10 on the Order of Merit will be exempt into the final stage of the Web.com Tour Q-School in Fall 2013.

The seven events confirmed for 2013 begin in on June 3-9 in Victoria, BC at the 30th playing of the Times Colonist Island Savings Open. After a week off, the ATB Financial Classic presented by TELUS takes place June 17-23 in Calgary, AB, with the Dakota Dunes Open returning to Saskatoon, SK two weeks later on Canada Day, July 1-7. The Syncrude Boreal Open presented by AECON begins the next week, July 8-14 in Fort McMurray, AB, followed by The Players Cup July 15-21 in Winnipeg, MB.

Maritime golf fans will be delighted to see that the Tour returns to Atlantic Canada for the 1st time in a dozen years.  The inaugural Cape Breton Celtic Classic will be played in Nova Scotia on September 2-8. The Lakes Golf Club, part of the burgeoning Cape Breton golf scene, will host the Tour September 2-8. The 2013 PGA TOUR Canada season will come to a close at the Tour Championship of PGA TOUR Canada September 9-15, with more details to be announced at a later date.

“This is a very solid starting point for our schedule,” said PGA TOUR Canada President Jeff Monday. “Our goal is to provide our members with quality events with long-term commitments, which leave a lasting impact in the communities we play and we feel we are well on our way to achieving those goals. We are working on several opportunities to increase the number of events not only this year but in 2014.”

For Ontario golf fans, especially those in Eastern Ontario, an obvious omission on the released schedule is The Great Waterway Classic.  Some logistical issues with the tournament’s organization have prevented it from it being confirmed for the schedule at this time but work is in progress to smooth out those details and have it included for 2013.  We’ll update that story with more details at a future date.

As expected the PGATOUR Canada event being worked on for Gatineau is not on the 2013 schedule; it has been indicated that work is in progress to have the National Capital Region on the calendar as early as 2014.
