Belleville, ON – 18 year-old London resident Alex Purdom fired a blazing five-under par 67 to gain the early advantage at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys’ Championship, taking place this week at Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club in Belleville.
The London Hunt and Country Club member marked seven birdies against a pair of bogeys to sit atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of the first round of the four day, 72-hole event.
Close on his heels with a pair of 69’s is recent CN Future Links Prarie Championship winner Lucas Kim of Toronto and 17-year old former Ontario Bantam Champion Gajan Sivabalasingham of Ballantrae. The pair both sit tied for second place, two strokes back at three-under par.
Eight golfers are tied for fourth place at two-under par; two-time Ontario Bantam Champion Matt LeMay of Waterloo, Team Ontario player Michael Nedoszytko of Toronto, Ryan Borg of Orangeville, Daniel Wilson of Stratford, Brad Burgess of St. Catharines, Luke Moser of Wateroo, Zach Hallborg of Welland, and Shane Crampton of London. All eight golfers delivered a 70 to sit three strokes off the pace.
The 156 strong field of Ontario’s best junior golfers will take to the course tomorrow morning for the second round, with the first tee time at 7:30 am. Following the conclusion of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 golfers and ties, with the remainder of the field advancing on to Thursday and Friday’s third and fourth rounds. The 2011 champion will be crowned on Friday afternoon.
