RCGA Select Scott Simmons As New Executive Director

Garry West, President of the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) announced today that Scott Simmons has been named the Association’s new Executive Director. The executive search process conducted by Korn/Ferry International began in early March and culminated in a news conference held in RCGA Golf House at Glen Abbey Golf Club.

“This is the proudest day in my professional career. It is an honour to be selected as the new Executive Director of the RCGA,” said Simmons. “I along with millions of Canadians hold a unifying passion for our great game. I am serious about making progressive steps for golf in Canada. I welcome the challenge and look forward to working with the Board, staff, and all our partners across the country to develop new opportunities for our sport.”

Simmons returns to the RCGA following a successful seven-year executive management career in the Canadian beer brewing industry. During that time he and his teams have delivered record sales, marketing and brand management results.

The native of Brantford, Ontario spent five banner years as Vice-President, Marketing and Business Development for The Beer Store (TBS). Among his many career achievements, Simmons was a leader in the development of a long-term strategic plan for TBS’s retail renewal program. Leading nearly 30 employees and managing a $6 million operating budget and $10 million capital budget, Simmons’ mandate spurred growth and success still entrenched in TBS merchandising and communications. He restructured TBS’s community investment program improving the organization’s position in community relations and environmental responsibility. Simmons was most recently a Vice President with Lakeport Brewing LP.

From 1992 to 2000 Simmons was the RCGA’s Director, Marketing and Communications. During that time he left an indelible mark with which the organization continues to benefit from. Simmons was one of the principals behind the agreement with Bell Canada to become title sponsor of the Canadian Open. The launch of Golf Canada, major network broadcast partnerships, and over $7 million in annual sponsorship revenues were also achieved under the leadership of Simmons.

A number of qualified candidates were interviewed and evaluated. In the end Scott was our unanimous selection. He holds valuable knowledge of the RCGA and has excelled outside of the RCGA holding a proven record of career success in senior executive positions. We are confident that he is the right candidate to set the present and future direction of our sport and for our organization.”

Senior management positions with Procter and Gamble, International Management Group (IMG), and Sales & Merchandising Group also highlight Simmons’ illustrious corporate career. During his time with IMG he was instrumental in developing a 10-year business plan for the RCGA. The majority of the plan was executed and delivered major organizational success.

A business graduate from the University of Western Ontario, Simmons will become the RCGA’s ninth leader in the Executive Director capacity. His first official day with the organization will be on July 23 – opening day of the 2007 Canadian Open.
