Shootout Sunday In Montreal

Ideal scoring conditions on day two at the Montreal Championship presented by Desjardins have set up what could be a wild Sunday finish.

The Le Fontainebleau course record (63) was tied once again on Saturday, this time by Chien Soon Lu of Taipei, Taiwan who will take a one stroke lead into the final round of the Champions Tour event.

The leader, who speaks very little English but knows how to laugh, had only a few words to share about Saturday’s torrid round. “Hit good drive, good iron, good putt.”

He will have to to keep up the pace tomorrow as lurking not far behind are a couple of very capable players.  2010 Montreal Championship Runner-Up John Cook is just a stroke back and hoping the get the trophy that just slipped out of his hands last year.  “You’ve got to hammer down all day tomorrow, because they are going to come flying. Someone might do what Larry (Mize) did last year, shoot 64 on Sunday, and next thing you know, you didn’t even know he was there and he’s holding the trophy.”

Last week’s Champions our winner, John Huston, shot 67 on Saturday and is two strokes back of the lead.  As a player known for going low during his PGA Tour career and sharing the course record due to his 63 on Friday, he might just be the player to keep an eye on in the third and final round.  He has some Canadian assistance this week in the form of his caddy, ex-Canadian and Nationwide Tour regular Brennan Webb of Bracebridge, Ontario.

While the Canadian caddy is having some success in Montreal, the Canadian players are struggling a bit.  Rod Spittle and Jim Rutledge fired identical 2-under 70s Saturday and have a share of 49th. Yvan Beauchemin came in at   71 while Daniel Talbot posted  74.

Sunday should offer up more great scoring conditions with sunshine and warm temperatures in the forecast.  There is a possibility of thunderstroms which might hamper the pace of the day if they develop.

The final group will tee off at 12:10 on Sunday.  The Golf Channel will have the broadcast on tape delay with the showing at 7-9:30 EST.
