Spectacular Field Confirmed for Flagstick Shootout

-72 Players Compete for Championship and Canadian Tour Exemption –

Lansdowne, Ontario, May 14th, 2012 – The Fourth Annual Flagstick Golf Magazine Shootout at Smuggler’s Glen is shaping up to be the best one ever.  The elite amateur golf tournament will play out this year on Saturday, May 26th and Sunday, 27th and has moved to a full invitational format.  Applicants were asked to apply by April 1st and more than 115 players indicated interest in playing the tournament. A final field of 72 players has now been selected.

Leading the field this year are the three men who have managed to get their name engraved on the coveted Shootout Rum Barrel Trophy so far, Allen McGee (5-time Ottawa City & District Champion and former Volvo World Amateur winner), Joe Matthews (perennial Smuggler’s Glen club champion), and defending champion Dwight Reinhart (former Nationwide Tour player and 2x PGA of Ottawa Zone Champion).

They trio of former champions will be joined by fine players from as far away as Florida; all wanting to win what has become a coveted championship, as well as the fruits of that victory.  That includes the pride of the win, extensive prizes from Nike Golf and the big carrot for players now attached to this tournament – an exemption into the Canadian Tour’s Great Waterway Classic.

The winner of the 36-hole championship will become the first non-Canadian Tour member exempt into the new Canadian Tour event that will be played this September 3-9th at the Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course.

That drawing card, along with the growing reputation of how players are treated and how the event is run, has prompted an unprecedented interest in the “Shootout”.

“It is deepest assembly of talent that we have ever seen at this tournament, bringing together some of the best players from across Ontario, Quebec, New York State, and even Florida.  We expect it will be a very pitched battle for this year’s championship,” says Tournament Director Jeff Bauder, Publisher of Flagstick Golf Magazine.

More than 50 of the players have indexes of 4 or less with an extensive grouping at scratch or better.  It’s so strong that defending champion Reinhart feels it may take 6-8 under par to win the tournament this year.  Reinhart won with a score of -4 in 2012.

Among the players competing will be:  Sean Lackey (3-time City of Kingston Champion), Simon Reyers (defending Eastern Ontario Amateur Champions), Kyle Koski (former Ottawa Citizen Amateur Champion) Bill Blake (5-time GAO Kingston District Senior Champion), along with many other amateur tournament winners, collegiate players, and several former professionals.  A complete list is posted at www.flagstickshootout.com

The invitees also enjoy a great test in Smuggler’s Glen, a course that has garnered much praise since opening in 2005.  At just over 6,600 yards and playing to a par of 72 the layout is marked by dramatic elevation changes, fairways playing parallel to exposed rock faces and many holes that provoke both thought and tension. It is continually voted among the top Public Golf Courses in the annual Flagstick Reader’s Choice awards.  Many will also enjoy accommodations at The Glen House Resort, directly across from the golf course on the shores of the St. Lawrence River.
