Sweet Sunday 62 For Fritsch

Last year Brad Fritsch was talking about “just needing an opportunity” beyond the Canadian Tour where he was then playing.  The 34 year-old former Manotick, Ontario resident earned himself that break last Fall at the PGA Tour Qualifying School where he grabbed status for the 2012 Nationwide Tour and so far this season he has made good on his confident statement that all he needed was an opening.

Sunday proved that again as the fourth Nationwide Tour event of the season, the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, played out in Lafayatte and Fritsch put on quite a show on his way to his second top ten finish of the year.

Headed into the final round in the middle of the pack, Fritsch did his best to distinguish himself early with an eagle on his first hole of the day and a stretch of four birdies in the middle of his front nine to make the turn in 30, six strokes under par for the day.  And that was just the start.  Brad poured in four more birdies over a five hole stretch on the back nine, and tempered by one bogey, posted a 9 under par, 62 for the day.  It was the lowest round in the field all week.

The 62 pushed Fritsch to a 15 under par total, good enough for a share of fifth place.  It bettered his best finish of the season so far, a tie for 7th in Panama, and earned him $16,950.00 for the week.

Starting the event in 27th place on the money list, the effort in Lafayette jumped Brad to the 16th spot, well within the 25 who will earn PGA Tour cards at the end of the 2012 season.

Three other Canadians made the cut in Louisiana.  Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C. finished in a tie for 18th, Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ontario tied for 36th and Matt McQuillan of Kingston, Ontario had a dismal weekend of 73, 76 that dropped him to a tie for 64th place. His final round included two triple bogeys.

The Nationwide Tour now has a short break before returning to the west coast on April 5-8 for the Soboba Golf Classic presented by Hub International.
