They are playing a lion-like course this week for the inaugural Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada, the famed Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda, but it proved to be a lamb on Tuesday with the normally active winds laying down.

To no surprise the top squad of Billy Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) and Danny King (The Performance Academy at Magma), currently the #1 and #4 ranked PGA of Canada players in the country, are tied at the top after round one.

The pair fired a 10-under par, 61 in the two-person four-ball format. It was matched by the team of Conrad Riley and Thomas Keddy of the Oslerbrook Golf Club.

The two teams are three strokes clear of the four teams nearest to the lead.

“This was just perfect weather for scoring today—no wind to speak of really and lots of sun is a solid recipe for going low,” said King, the 2015 PGA Championship of Canada champion.

“This golf course is just so much fun to play,” King added. “With the team formats we’re playing this week, Mid Ocean is really the perfect venue for this national championship because there’s so many holes where you’re presented with varying options to make birdie.”

Normally adversaries, this week marks the first occasion that Walsh and King have teamed up in an event.

“This is actually the first time Danny and I have been partners,” said Walsh. “And it’s an awesome feeling being able to count and root for him all day long.”

Among the four team in close pursuit and sharing third are Adam Blair/Mark Kohlen; Dave Levesque/Marc-Etienne Bussieres; Billy Houle/Francis Tanguay; and Max Gilbert/Jean-Pierre Morin. Each opened with a 64.

The lone National Capital area team in the event – Marc Foucault of Kingsway Park and Scott Johnson of Kanata Golf & Country Club, are tied for 34th place after a round of even par, 71.

Play will continue Wednesday with a foursomes format and will conclude with a scramble on Thursday.

The winning team will earn $12,000 of the $90,000 purse.
