The Ottawa Valley Golf Association Celebrates 100 Years of Women’s Golf with Founders Cup

by Joe McLean

The third round of the 2022 Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s Women’s City & District Championship will be held on the championship course of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022.

One hundred years ago on Tuesday, June 13th, 1922, the inaugural Women’s City & District Championship was held at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. On that day six Ottawa and area golf clubs were represented and the winner was Miss Helen Paget from the host club. She was presented with the Ahearn Trophy which is still in play 100 years later.

The entry list for the 1922 championship tournament held at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club included thirty-seven women from the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, fifteen from the Ottawa Hunt & Motor Club, fourteen from the Rivermead Golf club, ten from the Cataraqui Golf Club in Kingston, seven from the Brockville Country Club and three from the Links O’Tay Golf & Country Club in Perth.

Acting on a proposal put forward by OVGA Board Member Alex Pugh to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s City & District Championship, the Board of Directors of the OVGA and the Royal Ottawa Golf Club have invited two lady members from each of the original six clubs to participate in the Founder’s Cup competition in conjunction with the final round of the 2022 Women’s City & District Championship.

The twelve ladies will play a fun 9-hole tournament on the Royal Nine at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club beginning at 3pm and the winning team in the Founder’s Cup competition will receive crystal awards.

Scheduled to play in the Founder’s Cup competition are Jennifer Mirsky & Sandra (Sandy) Moir from the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, Louise Boudreault & Brettel Dawson from the Rivermead Golf Club, Barb Johns & Doreen Best from the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, Cathy Townshend & Marsha Lindsay from the Brockville Country Club, Mary Lynne Wilson & Dianne Brady from the Perth Golf Club and Judy Valberg & Nancy Mills from the Cataraqui Golf & Country Club.

Congratulations to the OVGA and the Royal Ottawa Golf Club for sponsoring this initiative commemorating 100 years of women’s competitive golf in the Ottawa area.
